Appreciation

Tell people when you like something
about them, their art, their laugh,
their style, their energy, their voice,
their way of being in the world, Don’t
assume they already know, or that it
won’t matter. You have no idea how
far a few honest words can go. You
might be the reason someone smiles
today, or the reason they keep doing
what they love. Appreciation costs
nothing, but it can rebuild confidence,
fuel creativity, and remind someone
that they matter.

Displaced Gaza families struggle as winter storm hits

After a night of relentless rain, Arafat al-Ghandour and his wife, Nour, finally exhaled in relief as the morning sun emerged, if only briefly, over the soaked displacement camp.

The couple, parents of five, live in a worn tent riddled with holes. They spent the night battling water pouring in from every direction.

Arafat, 39, shares the cramped space, no larger than eight square metres (86sq feet), with 15 family members, including his elderly parents, his sister and her family, and his brother’s wife and children. The conditions, he says, are inhumane.

“All night I was plugging the holes with rags and plastic bags,” Arafat said.

In the early morning, the family hurried to spread their drenched clothes, blankets and belongings in the sunlight to dry.

Desperate Gazans pull iron bars from rubble to construct tents and scratch out a living

As winter bites in Gaza, displaced Palestinians set out every day to homes destroyed by Israel. There they rip out iron rods from the walls and use them to prop up their flimsy tents or sell to scratch out a living in an enclave that will take years to recover from war.

Israeli attacks on journalists

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Israel has killed at least 246 journalists and media workers since the start of the war in October 2023.
Of that, 59 were directly targeted and killed by Israeli forces in what CPJ describes as murders. Most of the victims were Palestinian journalists and media workers reporting in the Gaza Strip, the group says.

Israel killed more journalists in 2025 than any other country, according to a recent report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The single deadliest attack in Gaza was a “double-tap” strike on a hospital in the south of the enclave on August 25, in which five journalists were killed, including Al Jazeera photographer Mohammad Salama.

Reuters news agency video journalist Issam Abdallah, 37, was killed in the Israeli attack on a group of reporters working in southern Lebanon on October 13, 2023, that also injured six others, including US citizen and AFP news agency journalist Dylan Collins.

Rights groups have said the journalists were deliberately targeted, which amounts to a war crime.

You must live at all costs,

Grow through bitterness little by little,

Start everything from the very beginning,

Look for signs of God in the little things.

If your day is painted black,

If the morning is angry and prickly,

You must live, cook porridge for breakfast,

Water the flowers, and believe in the best.

In the most hopeless troubles,

Keep breathing—and it will become easier.

Sometimes just one step is enough,

To straighten your shoulders again.

Free Bus Program in Iowa City Has Reduced Traffic and Pollution

Some of the improvements Iowa City has seen since implementing this program include:

•Buses are on time 13% more often

•Less crowded streets

•An 18% increase in bus ridership over pre-pandemic levels (most locations are seeing only 85% the bus use as pre pandemic)

2/
•24,000 metric ton decrease in CO2 emissions (equivalent of 5,200 cars)

•Drivers and passengers report less friction on buses and a more pleasant riding experience

All this was paid for by a 1% increase in utility taxes and increasing downtown parking costs from $1 to $2. So far the program has been a resounding success and is being renewed for an additional year.

Preface
The world we live in is made up of innumerable particles: elementary particles, atoms and molecules, and a multitude of substances with different and diverse properties: natural and synthetic substances, organic and inorganic compounds, and pure and composite materials. All of these are found in outer space and on Earth, in the air, in water sources, and on land, as well as in plants (“flora”) and animals (“fauna”).
