What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

has the vibes of a Roman high official who has been posted to some far northern backwater in England, surrounded by "uncultured" people. (us) who can't even run her palatial manner properly or deliver meals on time.

She is suffering so much poor creature.

That is how she is looking at me right now.

(I have added some photographic evidence of what she is like. Look at her!)

A brown tabby cat with big eyes resting on a tweed coat with one paw extended. She is a lovely little cat, with an expressive serious face looking right at you. The same little brown tabby cat with a white patch on her chest and the tip of her extended paw. Still resting on the tweed jacket. Her eyes are closed as if trying to find peace in a world of chaos and bad service.

food

Last night at our local wings place I ordered the hottest wing flavor. It was horrible, but it wasn't horrible because it was too spicy (of course it was), it was just plain bad flavor. If the flavor had been good, the spice level wouldn't have been the problem, but it seems like they just only cared about the spice level without any regard to the flavor...

Self-hosting does not make your data safe.

If you don't put in place, review, *and test* backup and recovery plans,,and security measures appropriate to the risk, your data are not "safe".

Your data might be less affected by the whims of third parties, which can be valuable for sure, but don't confuse that with your data being "safe".

And I say this as someone who loves self-hosting.

Any "beginners' guide to self-hosting" which doesn't lead with, or at least focus on, security and resiliency, is getting it wrong, IMHO.

I know a lot of online friends are in the same situation as me. But in my IRL erstwhile (geographically scattered) peer group, literally everyone
a) owns a house and
b) can and does take time off work (even if "only" 2 weeks a year) and
c) travels at least 1 or 2X a yr for pleasure, almost all internationally.

It's hard to maintain a real authentic friendship when our circumstances are so discrepant. What am I supposed to chat about? "That's great, and I'm so excited I made my rent this month!"
