TIL: $HOSTALIASES in FreeBSD
Apparently you can set the $HOSTALIASES environment variable in FreeBSD (and maybe some Linuxen? but not OpenBSD AFAICT) to point to an alternate hosts file (instead of the default /etc/hosts) for re-mapping particular hosts. This would let you do something like
$ HOSTALIASES=$HOME/hosts.txt myprog
and any name-resolution that myprog(1) does will first consult the ~/hosts.txt file.

ok so i'm on standby for jury duty, and the court house is somewhere that would require a bunch of transit connections to get to, and so i figured i'd try out one of these "ride sharing" things, but my phone is too old and apparently you have to use them through the app, but the summons is for january and my phone is roughly 9 years old and every surface of the phone except the screen by some miracle is damaged so... maybe I should get a new one?

But they all start with a standard introduction using a bald eagle making a "bald eagle" call. Once upon a time I didn't think twice of it, but thanks to the Fediverse, I now can hear that the actual call being used is a red-tailed hawk's call, as is almost always the case outside of nature documentaries (bald eagles have unimpressive, not particularly majestic calls). Sorry, USCSB, it's not you but it is you and all your sister agencies who have to do that.
