When Steve Jobs got that demo from Xerox it pretty much changed the world of computing and Apple did a masterly job of taking those ideas and making them work on the tiny microcomputers of the day.

So it's surprising to me that the windowing system in iPadOS is the absolute worst windowing system that has ever been created by any group of developers any time in history. How can a company completely forget what made them great?

Those people you see in videos blowing whistles, honking, video recording everything ICE does? They’re not just full-time activists who are used to this kind of thing, who tail ICE all day. They’re random retirees from down the street who heard the whistles and came outside even though the sidewalk’s a bit dicey. They’re mid-career professionals who were on their way home from a long day at work and heard the honking. They’re parents who are afraid their kid is going to be late for their violin lesson but they just have to be out there because this is too important.

If you’re wondering how you can help…

If you’re in MSP: talk to your neighbors, find the people who are doing organizing work, and get involved. Find something and show up for it. Info & resources here: monarcamn.org

If you’re elsewhere in the US: talk to your neighbors •now• about what’s happening, and get your support networks set up •before• this comes to where you live — unless of course it already has, in which case see above.

If you’re not in the US, spread the word about what’s happening here. Make the shame of ICE known internationally.

My makeup from last night

I feel like now that I'm on vacation I... actually have those long missed feelings of actually being alive and not just a walking zombie. I haven't done this in months now.

So, my polyfill for Translator API works quite well. But I don’t know how to reasonably make up-to-date, high quality language models easily available for users, without requiring gigabytes of disk storage to host, say, pl-fe. I don’t want to bring too much centralization by hosting a model registry in one place for all pl-fe/polyfill users or favoring a single pl-fe deployment.

Evan Prodromou shared the below article:

Schedule for Social Web Developer Room at FOSDEM 2026

Evan Prodromou @evanprodromou@socialwebfoundation.org

The schedule for the Social Web Developer Room at FOSDEM 2026 is starting to be populated as the speakers confirm their availability. We had a tonne of great submissions for this year's track, and even with double the time from last year, we still had to leave some great talks on the cutting room floor. But we still managed to fit in 24 great talks, large and small. We're going to see some additional events happening as FOSDEM 2026 gets nearer. Watch the #SOCIALWEBFOSDEM hashtag for more news […]

The worst thing about polyamory is that I can't gush about my partners to my extended family at christmas without causing a scene. I'm even super hesitant to talk about them with classmates in case they're not cool with the idea of me being poly. Why is almost everything important to me considered "political" or "not socially acceptable"??
