My reaction: JFC

A landmark study by epidemiologist Sam Goldman compared Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where trichloroethylene (TCE) had contaminated the water supply for approximately 35 years, against those at Camp Pendleton in California, which has clean water. Marines exposed to TCE at Lejeune were 70% more likely to develop Parkinson's.

The latest research suggests only 10 to 15 percent of Parkinson's cases can be fully explained by genetics. Parkinson's rates in the US have doubled in the past 30 years -- a pattern inconsistent with an inherited genetic disease. The EPA moved to ban TCE in December 2024. The Trump administration moved to undo the ban in January.

I'm relieved Merriam-Webster chose "slop" as the word of the year!

I recorded a WOTY episode Friday with Jess Zafarris and Danny Hieber, and M-W hadn't made its choice yet. But The Economist & Macquarie Dictionary had already chosen "slop," so it's in the show.

It's an obvious and fitting choice. Jess & I also both chose it.

I love how it's used to make so many other words:

— slopaganda
— sloperations
— slopographers
— sloptimists

News spreads like wildfire via private messages from neighbor to neighbor, and there’s •so• much that’s no making the news:

Person abducted on this block. Convoy of ICE vehicles spotted on this street. Observer shoved by ICE. Person abducted on that block. Observer threatened with a weapon by ICE.

ALL DAY EVERY DAY

And also, again and again — people need to know this! — I get these messages too:

ICE started to gather, but dispersed when too many observers showed up.

ICE vehicle headed back to base after being tailed in circles for an hour.

ICE started abducting someone, but let them go as the gathered crowd got larger and larger.

These people •really• do not want to be observed. Typical bullies: they cosplay tough guys, they waggle their gear around, but they •behave• like they’re afraid.

The are fluent in English of course, as is @destatisStatistisches Bundesamt For an international audience this of the latest population projection for Germany can be linked to English independently of browser localisation. Also – unlike the – use your opposable thumbs right away on your smartphone. The age pyramid now has feature parity at all sizes.

Two new mastodon plushies look at a population pyramid of Germany in 2057 when they themselves may have children. While the outline depicts the default model, the much narrower pyramid is of a hypothetical model calculation with zero net migration.

Yup, been caught out by this before. This is one thing that I would like -Wall to trigger on, iirc it doesn't and requires a different flag, which I always forget

@catsaladCat 🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow: Debian: cockroach -- unkillable, ressilant, will be laughing at us from the rubble two centuries from now. Eats ancient garbage and can drink used engine oil straight.

Arch: ant -- tedious, well organized, hard working, sort of pedantic and singularly focused, looks chaotic but everything has a purpose you just can't understand right away. You sort of need to put it in an ant farm (emulator, container, roots, etc) and watch it for some time to understand what is going on.

OpenSUSE: some sort of small dog, I'll go with Chihuahua -- easy to underestimate, pleasant to be with, plenty of people would probably like it more if not for the fact that it isn't stunningly pretty and will sometimes bite you

NixOS: magpie -- finnicky, sorta self interested, very messy but fastidious at the same time, piles of rare and valuable objects of unknown use organized in a haphazard way that will never change, steals shiny stuff, has the biggest hoard of weird knickknacks you've ever seen, does its own thing, dislikes you you by default but will warm up to you if you spend time with it and give it cool stuff.

days 1413-15

On the 13th, I updated the ilo+graphica.cs to incorporate the design impromements made in the X11 & Wayland versions of the ilo vm's optional minimal graphics mode.

See fossils.retroforth.org:8000/il for the diff.

On the 14th & today I implemented a rough clone of the Windows 3.1 Program Manager in C#.

See fossils.retroforth.org:8000/wi for this.
