Dare to be inconvenienced.

We have been trained to prioritize "seamless" experiences over ethical ones. But every convenience has a hidden cost, whether it is labor rights, environmental impact, or the erosion of privacy.

Efficiency is a metric for machines, not for a meaningful life. When we stop choosing products solely for their convenience, we reclaim our agency. We choose local over global, human over algorithm, and sustainable over instant.

What would happen if we stopped using services that do very little good for society, even if it means taking the long way around?

Ancient Greek Lyrics by Willis Barnstone, 2009

Ancient Greek Lyrics collects Willis Barnstone's elegant translations of Greek lyric poetry—including the most complete Sappho in English, newly translated. This volume includes a representative sampling of all the significant poets, from Archilochos, in the 7th century BCE, through Pindar and the other great singers of the classical age, down to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

William E. McCulloh's introduction illuminates the forms and development of the Greek lyric while Barnstone provides a brief biographical and literary sketch for each poet and adds a substantial introduction to Sappho—revised for this edition—complete with notes and sources. A glossary and updated bibliography are included.

# Abseil Performance Hints (Jeff Dean & Sanjay Ghemawat)

MAGA Boomer: At your age in 1970 I paid off college & bought a house with hard work.

Millennials: In 1970 college was 5% of median salary. Now it’s 44%. A median home was $24K. Now it’s $417K. The top marginal tax rate was 70%. Now it’s 37%. Sure maybe you did work hard—but then you closed the door behind you.

OK, if you're a huge nerd who spends Saturdays online too much I'm sure you've heard about the NIST NTP servers failing and being taken offline¹ ² ³.

If you're in Canada, please know that our own NRC offers stratum-2 time sources as a government-funded public service⁴ & monitored/auth'd stratum-1 services on a cost recovery basis⁵.

We can be proud of this.

As we approach the New Year it's becoming clear that by the end of the year the number 17 will take the highest value it has ever achieved. 13 continues its exponential trend since the last century and sadly 7 hasn't grown by even the smallest epsilon.

When the lights go out in San Francisco
Where do the Waymos go
To continue their incessant beeping and honking
Circling aimlessly to and fro

How do the tech bros survive their life
With no ChatGPT to consult
How do they even feed themselves
Without delivery drivers to insult?

What happens to all the data centers
When the generators run out of fuel
Does the Internet just shut down
Who will the oligarchs rule?

Maybe we should just keep the lights out
And all go early to bed
Since if we keep the powering the AI machines
We may all end up, dead.
