Hello, I'm so I will try to introduce myself. I'm Armin, 45 years old, and I'm interested in music (Death Metal, Jazz, Techno, Ambient, Dub), old computers, UNIX-like operating systems, and I love beer! I'm currently living in Berlin/Germany. You can find me on IRC (Libera, OFTC, HackInt), and on Codeberg, with the same nickname. I mostly use IRC and Email.

This happened yesterday:

I was handing over a laptop with the BSD Cafe sticker to a student of mine, and the recipient wanted to remove the sticker for reasons including misalignment, not actually running BSD, etc. I tried saying things like "Steffano got the sticker from Italy etc..." nothing was working. Finally, said "it's his birthday today!" and got a "Oooh..." and the sticker was saved!

Day 21 of Advent of Compiler Optimisations!

Summing an array of integers? The compiler vectorises it beautifully, processing 8 at a time with SIMD. Switch to floats and... the compiler refuses to vectorise, doing each add one by one. Same loop, same code structure — why does the compiler treat floats so differently?

👉 Why do people use Slackware?

One thing people often miss is continuity.
Slackware isn’t just technically stable , it’s culturally stable.

The same person, Patrick Volkerding, has guided it for 30 years with the same philosophy: don’t change things unless there’s a real reason.

For many users, that long-term trust matters more than new features.

You know what Slackware will be next year, and that’s rare today.
