What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Strangers, purportedly men, sending a private message that just says 'do you mind if I ask you something?' or 'can I ask you a question?' Is this some new scam? I’ve just blocked my third in two days. I blocked them quicker than a reply guy on a 5000-character instance who lectured me about Linux, so I didn’t notice if the messages were all from the same server. The wording was similar but the profiles were different. Strange scam, if it is one. There were no dodgy links.

2. What he says about climate is patently false (more on that later) but to the extent he's saying "politicians shouldn't do the right thing unless it's popular", I'd note only that that is a toddlers view of leadership. If the popular kids are mean, should you be mean?

My new book Everything but the Code is packed with structured advice to help developers ship, and it's been hugely popular. Now I'm working on something bigger, and I'm calling it Kickstart – a macOS app to help indie developers succeed on the App Store.

The logotype for Kickstart, with four colored bars.

We need to remember that not everyone shares our same preferences, like how I use none of these platforms, but others do.

If we want to the fediverse to thrive, we need to focus on making everything easier.

As already stated before, we do not use GPTs when writing our texts. We may have inadvertently copied GPT-style writing by following Kickstarter guidelines, but all words are paw-written by our lovely team.

We understand the distrust because we've ourselves been disappointed by many orgs and companies falling down that AI sloppification, but please keep in mind that LLMs have been trained on existing documents and we have professional copy-writers who are tuned to write texts based on a certain style. And if Kickstarter has a certain style, they match it.

On Fedi/socials we do not have such guidelines and can walk over the keyboard as we like to.

Our copy-writer feels a bit hurt by this accusation, please bear in mind that there's actual real people behind this ordeal.

EDIT: To clarify, some reached out to us and where just really friendly throughout the ordeal despite their alarm bells ringing. This is entirely valid and we thank you from the depths of our hearts for this. We're just sad about much more hostile wording by others. Love y'all <3

Edsger Wybe Dijkstra was a foundational figure in computer science. His pioneering work established the groundwork for several key domains, including algorithm and program design, operating systems, distributed processing, and the formal verification of mathematical arguments. The "E. W. Dijkstra Archive" contains the manuscripts of Edsger W. Dijkstra that everyone in compsci is must read.
