As the year comes to a close, a big thank you to everyone behind this work: across working groups, task forces, and the conversations that keep our community moving.

Wherever youโ€™re closing the year from (cold or warm weather!), we wish you a well-deserved break. See you in 2026 to keep building open research information, together.

Did I just use the level app on my phone to carefully level my front-facing bike light to be (more or less) exactly horizontal? Maybe I did.

(It won't stay that way, it uses a rubber strap and I have to take it off when I make grocery stops on the way home. And also to recharge it. Someday I may put it in a more fixed mount.)

What kind of half-arse email sending company keeps less than two weeks of records and just goes "Sorry, can't find an email that old" when you find and report spam a couple of weeks after it's sent ๐Ÿ™„

Edit: Apparently they only keep 7 days "to avoid digital waste" ๐Ÿ˜†

Debug this idea for me: A permissioned Mastodon server for kids and parents in a community.

Goals:
- Share plans for activities without parents having to text each other all the time
- Be silly
- Learn healthy social media norms under supervision

Policies:
- All messages (including direct) are auditable by parent admins
- Collaboratively authored code of conduct

Hey! Iโ€™m CEO of a company that has just raised $10 billion for an app that takes the hard work out of enjoying music. Did you know, some people waste hours each day listening to โ€œtunesโ€. Our AI will listen to it for you and summarise it in a 15 second scream leaving you more time to focus on what's really important in life: adding value.

So hypothetically, (I'm NOT suggesting this literally, this is for discussion purposes only!)

Prompt:
if users ONLY had Public/Followers only/Private as 'base' post types, how would they be negatively impacted? *Specifically* what types of posts would fall through the cracks? How limited would Followers only really be?

Goal:
There obviously would be negative impact. By discussing how, we can brainstorm BETTER ways of giving them this functionality

Sometimes it's not "how can you bike in this", it's "how can I not bike in this". Which is why today is the surprise last bike commute day of the year, when I thought last Thursday would be.

(Tomorrow is a WFH day for me and then the entire university is on break until January. I will hopefully do at least one more bike ride this year, for groceries. Maybe it'll be warm enough before January 1st for one last recreational ride, too.)
