A short while ago I was explaining to a client the reason why his website has seen a very significant increase in load over the past few weeks. On many of the servers I manage, I see connections coming from residential users, yes, but mainly from unscrupulous AI scrapers that do not care about overloading everything. Someone on their side replied to me: "Wouldnโ€™t moving everything to the cloud solve the problem? I mean... autoscaling!"

That sparked a somewhat "conspiratorial" thought. Some colleagues have told me that, with the recent surge in AI bot traffic, their costs have skyrocketed. Given how much money is being spent, and not earned, on AI, are we really sure this is not, in some way, planned or at least welcomed as a way to increase costs for end users of cloud services and funnel them into AI budgets?

Europe is making a list, checking it twiceโ€ฆ and upgrading its trains to high-speed โ€“ nice! ๐Ÿš„

While you are sipping hot chocolate, we are cooking up 200+ km/h rail magic:

โœจ Faster journeys: Berlin โ†’ Copenhagen in 4hr instead of 7hr
๐Ÿš† New routes: Lisbonโ€“Madridโ€“Paris and Tallinnโ€“Rigaโ€“Vilniusโ€“Warsaw
๐ŸŒ™ More night trains for long trips
๐ŸŽซ One ticket for your whole journey, and easier booking across borders

By 2040, your holidays might just start on the rails.

๐Ÿ‘‰ link.europa.eu/hDyYBG

A watercolour-style illustration depicting a sleek, red and white high-speed train, labelled "EU Holiday Express in the making," speeding out of a swirling, abstract representation of the blue European Union flag with its yellow stars. In the background, there are snow-covered Christmas trees and picturesque, snow-dusted houses. The EU logo is also visible in the bottom right corner.

seeing a very interesting LLM psychosis case brewing on Twitter, this one guy David Budden (a well-respected programmer, former Director of Engineering at DeepMind) is convinced he can solve Millenium problems with bounties just by using LLMs and feeding DAGs into them (seemingly), and experienced mathematicians are trying to loot him by tricking him into 5-figure bets (based).

he's released a bunch of proof papers so far, and he's lashing out at anyone speaking against his proofs and demanding they provide a long clear explanation of why his results aren't valid (most of it is him declaring new axioms), even as he admits he is not a math guy.

is LLM psychosis a real thing or do LLMs really appeal to people already having a tenuous grasp on reality

I shouldnโ€™t have to say this, but please donโ€™t post direct links to the elementary OS ISO, especially on release day. This is my only form of income and I really donโ€™t make a lot of it. I want to keep making elementary OS as my job, but when you bypass our pay-what-you-can ask it cuts directly into the revenue I rely on to pay rent and buy food. The vast majority of people already pay nothing when they download. Please donโ€™t take away the biggest opportunity I have for folks to support my work

how can we cut our CI times by 50โ€“90% and reduce our dependency on #github actions, securely and cheaply enough for a large public #rustlang codebase?

we did exactly that for @servo by building a self-hosted runner system that does virtual machine orchestration under the hood, all for barely 400 EUR/month!

talk video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W1mSXdlRqA

blog post:

How much faster?

- linux-unit-tests job:โ€‚34m29s โ†’ 3m15s (โˆ’90%)
