This is a CDE on Mageia 9. It took me several hours and consultations with friendly people on Mageia forums to make it work.
CDE is very archaic so I had to rebuild the whole Motif library reverting some recent patches before compiling CDE itself. My tiny HP Stream 14 laptop with Intel N3060 CPU had a hard time building this monstrosity.
Now the hardest part comes: figuring out why I did this and what do I actually do with it.

It's pretty good, it allowed me to find quite a number of people based on incidentally reading their blogs.

Also — if you are organising an international conference and still plan for that to take place in the US, think again. You are putting your international audience at risk. Not just Trump critics, also transgender people, non-white people and more groups.
Do note that I still refuse to make all US people responsible for what their administration is doing. But I do ask them to do everything they can to stop this development towards splendid isolation and authoritarianism. For your own sake.

llms changing the cost of these decisions means they're going to be made differently. i don't know where this ends up, or what that looks like, or if it'll be better or worse than we are right now. but i do think it's an interesting question to wonder about
but refusing to do custom anything can also lead to bloat too, just in a different way: huge apps that do tons of things users don't want
at the same time, no sharing at all seems wasteful too. the whole point of re-usable components is to build a stable base to be able to build more reliable software, faster
and this "build instead of buy" approach is sort of the opposite of what a lot of people see as the point of open source, which is to build a commons but also, that "commons" is at *least* duplicated across permissive/viral licenses some duplication is good actually
just to be clear, i'm not saying this is exactly good or bad or whatever i think, sorta like static vs dynamic linking, there's a ton of tradeoffs in software, across various axes
