I was recently reminded of this.
A couple decades ago, I wrote a short paper that described how the basic approaches of cryptography and computer security lead to an efficient and practical privilege escalation attack against master-keyed mechanical locks, which I published in IEEE Security and Privacy (a nerdy computing technical journal).

아이가 헌책방을 가보고 싶어 했다. 알라딘, 예스24 중고 서점 같은 깔끔한 곳 말고, 책을 정리할 수 없어 세로로 촘촘히 쌓아놓은 옛날 느낌의 그 헌책방이다. 일단 현재 거주하고 있는 경기도 지역에서는 그런 헌책방을 찾기가 어려운 것 같고, 그나마 서울에 좀 있는 듯 한데 거기가 기대했던 그런 경험을 할 수 있는 곳인지는 알 수 없었다.
마친 간만에 고향에 내려 간 김에 생각이 나 헌책방을 찾아봤다. 어렸을 적 성행했던 헌책방 골목의 서점들은 대부분 폐업했고, 지금은 4군데 정도만 영업을 하고 있었다. 방문한 날 그나마 가장 오래된 헌 책방이 오픈하여 아내, 아이와 함께 방문했다.
편하게 둘러볼 수 있었고, 몇 겹의 책장에 빼곡히 꽂힌 책들을 둘러보다 보니 금새 시간이 지나갔다. 마음에 드는 책들을 각자 몇 권씩 집어 들고 나서기 위해 계산을 했다. 이미 온라인 중고서점을 많이 이용하는 입장이라 직접 방문한 헌책방이 특히 저렴하진 않았다. 하지만
