What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Looking back at 2025 I can't help but feel an immense sense of gratitude towards the fediverse.

I found so many friends and lovely communities on here. I feel part of a rebel alliance, working towards the goal of creating a better internet - and resisting broligarchs.

This year I made a stock photo for the fediverse and an introductory video. I hope I can find MANY new ways to support the good cause in 2026.

Wishing everyone a wonderful new year!

We got this.

This article from @pluralisticCory Doctorow was a really great read. I like this flavour of "elbows up" a lot - ending anticircumvention laws and maybe even loosening copyright laws. It would definitely be better than counter-tariffs. pluralistic.net/2025/12/16/k-s

HAPPY PUBLIC DOMAIN DAY! And Happy New Year!

Books published in 1930 will enter the U.S. public domain, such as:

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett: This novel introduced the world to the famous detective Sam Spade.
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner: A masterpiece of American literature.
The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie: This was the first novel to feature the beloved character Miss Marple.

The centerpiece consists of four large numerals arranged horizontally, displaying "2025" with a unique transition effect. Each digit is rendered in white against solid black rectangular backgrounds:

The "2" appears in a standard, complete form
The "0" is also shown in complete form
The second "2" is again complete
The final digits show a split-flap or mechanical counter-style animation, with "6" visible on top and "5" on the bottom, divided by a horizontal line through the middle of the rectangle.

Last year at this time, I was at a nice venue, enjoying a big New Year's Eve dinner and listening to live music, waiting for 2025 to begin.
This year, though, we’re at home, peaceful and relaxed, waiting for my wife to recover her strength after a long bout of the flu.
The common thread? A year ago, I had just set up the 'FediMeteo bot' for automated updates (which, updated and improved, is still running today). And I was planning the announcement date.
This year, I’ve just finished two changes that will further improve the bot and the service.

They’ll go live tomorrow, and I’ll announce them officially! 🙂

psychology literature on autism is all so cringe.

"90% of autistic people are men" 100% of us can't believe you've fallen for this self-fulfilling diagnostic issue. ... and 90% of us wear striped knee socks.

"a few autistic people are so high-functioning that they even manage to hold down a job" we are holding down the entire science and tech economy, Clarence.

"a defining characteristic of autism is a lack of desire to share interests with others and a deficiency in theory of mind" I think the issue might be that you have never once spoken to a single autistic person as if YOU possess theory of mind, Karen. Now, the doors have been locked for your convenience, and my six hour presentation on obscure writing systems may commence.

I backed up the 15-STABLE installer/update build VM. I plan to sell some assets and buy new enterprise drives for the server in the new year.

We need to get away from using cheap consumer SSDs for our servers. We don't have the budget for enterprise drives, but I'll try to make it happen regardless.

Your periodic reminder that donations to the HardenedBSD Foundation are eligible for tax deduction in the US. All donations go directly in supporting our infrastructure.

I think people who self host should try not to see ‘family members not wanting to use your service’ as ‘stupid’ and more

Switching costs are hard

It’s really hard to change consumer behavior

Even if your solution is better

This is the no 1 thing that people who have never worked on the consumer side of tech need to learn.

Start by not thinking people are stupid.

I have a feeling that homotopy type theory might be a better foundation for music theory. For instance, two pitches an octave apart are often described as equal, but it's a non-trivial equality. One might say that there is a "path" between them. Different chord inversions are also "equal" in this sense. A thirteenth chord can be identified with an added sixth, and so on. Then there are chords that are missing the third or the fifth. Such chords can be idenitified using more than one path, so you may have higher homotopies.

ah yes if you set peertube concurrency to 16 it will download the same 4K@25 7.6GB source file 16 times to encode all the different variants.

makes sense. maybe that's why they shipped and my platform stayed vaporware.

🐀 A reminder why we are going through the drain.. thank you, , as always. You don't let us down. 💙 💚 🧡

Don't be in the rat race, and don't be in disneyland either. instead. Think out of the box. You can do it, and so can I. 💪

I’ve never once gotten scammed as an adult, and that’s not because I’m clever or anything.
It’s because I got scammed a million times as a child on RuneScape and none of the tricks work on me now.
I was trained on the battlefield
