Milky Way Easter Eggs

This artist’s concept visualizes gamma-ray bubbles discovered by NASA’s Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. From end to end, the bubbles extend 50,000 light-years, or roughly half of the Milky Way’s diameter. Hints of the bubbles’ edges were first observed in X-rays (blue) by ROSAT, a Germany-led mission operating in the 1990s. The gamma rays mapped by Fermi (magenta) extend much farther from the galaxy’s plane.

We got a halo

An artist’s concept of our Milky Way galaxy’s dark matter halo.

An even larger halo of dark matter (about a million light-years across) cocoons the stellar halo. This mystery material has mass, so its gravity pulls on things we can see. But it isn’t visible itself, and no one knows exactly what it’s made of. This strange stuff makes up about 90 percent of our galaxy’s mass.

Israel said it will suspend permits for more than three dozen aid organisations for allegedly failing to meet new requirements for operating in war-devastated Gaza, a move likely to worsen already dire conditions for Palestinians in the enclave.

Organisations facing bans as of January 1, 2026 have failed to meet new requirements for sharing detailed information about their staff, funding and operations, Israeli authorities said on Tuesday.

Israel made 7,500 arrests in West Bank in 2025

Israeli forces arrested 7,500 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in 2025, according to the Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies.

At least 600 children, including those under the age of 10, were among those arrested, the monitor said, adding that more than 200 women and girls were taken, too, most of them using the pretext of “incitement” on social media platforms.
