For Palestinians in Gaza, the Rafah crossing had long been the only connection to the outside world.
That was until May 2024, when Israeli forces occupied the Palestinian side of the crossing, destroying its buildings, preventing travel and causing a severe humanitarian crisis, especially for patients.
It marked the first time in 20 years that Israeli forces directly controlled the border crossing, as they deployed soldiers in a military buffer zone all across the Philadelphi Corridor.

A seal pup covered with lanugo, a protective layer of fluffy hair, stained yellow with amniotic fluid. As the pup grows, its coat will become pure white, which it will then moult and gain its final coat, with a spotted pattern unique to each animal, a helpful means of identification for researchers.
The islands’ more remote shores present relatively safe places for seals to give birth. Grey seal pups are weaned by their mothers for 19 days, then left to fend for themselves. They will live off their own blubber reserves for a similar period before entering the sea to forage for fish.

The result is a record of an ever-fluid environment – often brutal, always beautiful; fragile and tough – that lies on the brink of drastic climate breakdown. And yet, perhaps, against all the odds, the resilience of these animals, on these islands, at this time, can offer us a tentative sense of hope.

Hospitals reducing services due to lack of fuel
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights has announced that several hospitals and health facilities in the enclave have been forced to reduce services or cease operations due to an Israeli blockade on fuel.
