Military action against a sovereign state is illegal under the UN charter. There are two exceptions: self-defense, and UN Security Council approval.

Heads of state have personal immunity while in office from prosecution in foreign courts.

This attack is a serious breakdown of international norms.

UPDATE: edgelord replies not welcome, thanks.

"The horrific attack on Venezuela overnight puts the U.S. in the same camp as Russia.

An undeclared, unprovoked, and illegal war designed to, well, we can only guess—though Donald Trump and JD Vance have seemed to concede this was a war for oil—puts the United States on the same moral and legal footing as Russia, which invaded its neighbor in a war of pure aggression."

"It is likely concerns that this is about oil—Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez nationalized oil fields in the country and Trump has repeatedly railed against 'stolen oil'—will continue to surface. On Fox News this morning, Trump said, 'When you do oil everything follow.'”

Living in the U.S. is a little like being in a dissociative state. There's such a disconnect. Near me, new businesses and housing are going up like gangbusters, even though we know thousands have lost their jobs. Then I find out that my government has kidnapped the leader of another nation.

Everything feels brittle and shattered. And when everything breaks into jagged pieces, you're much more likely to cut yourself, even while cleaning it up.

Statements that upon reading in a newspaper story I would assume were written by the White House or the military itself:

"Details are still emerging, but what happened in Caracas was a clear reminder that America’s military and intelligence capabilities are second to none."

"What are Iranian leaders thinking now as they consider how to respond to widespread anti-government protests? Are the communists in Cuba sleeping well?"

“If citizens endorse the idea that people named by authorities as “criminals” or “terrorists” have no right to due process, then they are accepting that they themselves have no right to due process. It is due process, and due process alone, that allows you to demonstrate that you are a citizen. Without it, the masked men in the black vans can simply claim that you are a foreign terrorist and disappear you.” - Timothy Snyder
