Misinformation thrives in stressful times. I know we all want to share news right now but when you feel the urge to share something on your feed consider asking:

* Who posted this? Are they a reporter, or do they have what looks like a reliable source?
* Have you heard of this news site before?
* Where is this photo from? Did they take it? Could it be something other than what the poster claims? Is there a way you can tell if it is what it says it is?

I looked through every California federal rep and tried to find if they made a statement about the invasion, linked to their statement and sorted by how much I like the statement

I have X blocked in my regular browser so for the first 8ish reps I forgot to check if they made a statement on X.

My method was search for their house.gov website, see if there's a press release, then look at bluesky or twitter accounts if mentioned.

These are stronger condemnations mentioning the US's history of imperialism

As a Canadian this mornings news is extremely disturbing. The Trump administration since its earliest days has questioned the sovereignty of Canada and now its shown it has no problems ignoring the rule of law.
In all honesty Canadians should prepare themselves mentally for some form of occupation. As I say this it sounds like science fiction, I wish it were.

Happy Solar New Year! My goal for this quarter is to figure out what kind of work I want to start looking for, and to put together a solid resume. To that end, I have a favor to ask. If you have any recent experience with looking for work, or any experience hiring folks, I'd like to pick your brain. If you've been looking for work or found a job, I want to know what worked for you and what didn't. If you're a hiring manager, I want to know what you look for, what kinds of questions you ask, and any other advice or ideas you may have. My initial list of questions is short, but I'm sure it will evolve as I talk to more folks. If you're up for having a chat with me, let me know and I will send you a meeting schedule link.

Boosts greatly appreciated.

Not sure why this dross, dated Dec 1, seems to be circulating now (and why it didn't cross my feed a month ago), but wow what a terrible essay.

Here's the thing about relativity.

Well, there are several things about it. The first is that the things it tells you are simultaneously absurd and obvious from principles.

But the one I mean is that if you just decide "oh yeah I'll accept this even though it's ridiculous" and then you go ahead and follow the math, it tells you things that are completely ridiculous, that then turn out to be completely true.

(So, why are they ridiculous? Because these effects are so tiny in the conditions we're exposed to that we'd never notice if we hadn't predicted them first, and our brains built an inaccurate internal model of gravispacetime. And also because in the normal conditions we're expose to, these things even out like the age/planetary rotation/orbit/precession thing from the other toot.)

Practically every tangentially related to work external meeting I have had with other Canadians in the last year has included a segue where all parties discussed taking steps to diversify away from US infra/software/orgs.

It's the kind of activity where nothing seems to be happening, until it happens all at once.

e.g. We began researching, negotiations, and planning early in 2025 and only actually started migrating systems in December. We will begin cancelling contracts later this month.

My favorite finding from : Do I need a .meow TLD? No, but also, yes, yes I do. :3 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dotmeow/meow-next-round-gtld-application (oh and profits made from this will be used for funding of lgbtqia+ communities. I think a lot more peoples need to see this, there is only so much time left until februrary :D )

i wake up. the year is 2---. the country i happened to be born in is at war. again. i had no say in the matter, and i will have no say in the next one. i give money to the guy on the street corner. i make some art. i try not to think about the supply chain for each of the material goods that surround me. i manage to not cry. i try not to yell too much in traffic. i wonder how it ends.

Hi!

Jennifer Hamilton here, formerly of med-mastodon.com. That server shut down suddenly. If you followed me before for my toots about , , , my gripes about , or even just a few pictures and chats about bicycling, I'm on mstdn.science now.

The old went down suddenly in the last week of December 2025, and I don't have a list of my old followers. Please boost this so they can find me!

Venezuela struggles with record hyperinflation, shortages of basic goods, unemployment, poverty, disease, high child mortality, malnutrition, environmental issues, severe crime, and widespread corruption.

US sanctions and the seizure of Venezuelan assets overseas have cost the country $24–30 billion.

That didn't work so they kidnapped the President, just to get the oil.... they will do a deal with whoever gives them unfettered access to the oil

And Venezuela will still have all the problems above and no oil

Oil control was the objective not to help improve the lives of the people of Venezuela

무알콜 와인 주문해봤는데 완전히 알콜이 없진 않고 아주아주 적은 미량만 있는것 같긴한데 괜찮긴하네 근데 가격이 꽤 있어서 아무래도 돈지랄 같으니 자주 먹진 못할듯; 10불 이내면 괜찮을텐데... 있으려나??;

I love how all the kids these days use “slop” to refer to any generative AI content, and the CEOs of companies who have placed big bets on AI are trying to do damage control because associating “slop” with AI is hurting their brands. 🍿

Over the holiday, I put together a new window switcher for macOS. It's called Winby. And its special ability is to let you switch to a window based on any text in the window. Press the hotkey, type some text that's in the window, and hit return. Totally free. obra.github.io/winby

RE: mastodon.online/@larsmb/115832

Did you know IBM made extra large punch cards for the Nazi regime because they wanted to track so many parameters of their citizens?

In more recent news, RAM prices have gone through the roof because the parameter sizes of the LLMs ... Uh.

Well at least it ain't IBM this time.
