“This is an overthrow of a foreign government. It’s an act of war. It is an open-ended declaration of foreign occupation. And as all at the microphone either proudly declared and reluctantly admitted, it was pulled off without consultation with anyone outside their little circle.
That’s what’s impeachable. If Trump understood what he was saying, he was violating all concepts of checks-and-balances. If he didn’t understand, he is incapacitated.” open.substack.com/pub/fallows/

"A reporter asked the obvious: if the U.S. is going to 'run' Venezuela, who is in power right now? Trump’s answer was incoherent. He claimed the U.S. would run it 'with a group' and then gestured vaguely to people behind him, saying, 'The people that are standing right behind me, we’re going to be running it.'

That 'group' included Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth."

1989年の「パナマ侵攻」について読むと、〈日の下に新しきものなし〉みたいになるな…

y-history.net/appendix/wh1703-
>> アメリカの… ブッシュ(父)大統領〔が〕… パナマへの侵攻の口実としたのは、「パナマの政情が不穏になり、アメリカ人の生命が危険にさらされているとして、アメリカ人の生命とパナマの民主主義を守り、麻薬取引を撲滅する」…

ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9
>> ブッシュはこの侵攻を、ノリエガの煽動に対するアメリカの自衛権発動であると主張…

ちなみに、この時の“独裁者” ノリエガ将軍は結局米国で裁かれ服役している。

I don't think the US is going to occupy Venezuela.

It has about 30M people. It's about 900,000 km², about the size of Texas + Oklahoma (or Spain + France).

From everything I've read, the US has about 15,000 troops in the Caribbean.

Compare the invasion of Iraq in 2003 -- about half the area, slightly smaller population. The US deployed about 150,000 troops to the area - 10x what are currently in the Caribbean.

I have been working on a Dart implementation of OCapN and am pleased to publish a good chunk of the work I've done so far.

There's still lots to be done (like not just faking a network) but the pieces of distributed object-object communication, distributed acyclic garbage collection, promise pipelining, and third-party handoffs are all there for those who are interested in taking a look.

As a part of my grant from @nlnet I will be putting effort into a better dev introduction than "browse the repo" but for now, here's the repo:

Article 2(4) of the UN Charter: This is the "cornerstone" of international law. It strictly prohibits the "use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state." A cross-border raid into a capital city (Caracas) to seize a leader is a direct violation of this article

James Fallows offers quick reactions to "the most disturbing presidential press conference I have seen in my life":

1. Trump himself looked and sounded very bad.

2. Trump made the case for his own impeachment.

3. Special horseshit award for Marco Rubio.

4. Remember when this was about drugs? Hah hah hah!

5. Remember when Trump was all about ‘America First’ and staying out of other people’s battles? Hah hah hah!
