What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My little cousin asked for an Amazon Echo believing that she could ask it to play any song, she was disappointed in finding out she needs a subscription for that.

I’m considering to teach her how to maintain a digital music library on her phone she could then play on Echo trough Bluetooth but in the last years I had little experience with Android. I need recommendations on a good and ad-free music player app with easy library management and maybe a great looking UI too. Free and paid options are both good but subscriptions are a deal breaker.

empire

it is always annoying to argue against western imperialism because it is sugarcoated with "we're bringing Freedom and Democracy™ to these people" so i'm kinda glad the white house people just said "yeah we're gonna drill the shit out of the place for oil"
i no longer look like a conspiracy theorist which is nice, but the empire is gonna take a lot of lives as it is imploding in real time

what a fucked up way to start the new year, i am so tired of living through major historical events

something i dont think a lot of tech workers have figured out yet: the tech industry isn’t in the business of making tech products anymore. they’re a banking/advertising empire with tech as a front business.

working at a FAANG company used to be this impressive thing because these companies were ostensibly doing all the most exciting innovation and hiring all the best software people to make it happen.

i dunno if that was ever actually true but it certainly hasn’t been true for years. these companies are not doing anything impressive or innovative in tech, they’re solely in the business of making money.

A freelance journalist friend of mine who writes about science and math has discovered that someone is using LLMs to impersonate him to try to get assignments.

Deeply creepy but also, um, being a freelance science journalist is about as lucrative as running a lemonade stand. Choice of scams here is woefully underthought.

Y’know, the recent discussion about the US world dominance relying on the petrodollar has me thinking: it sure is a coincidence that, since 2012, we’ve rocketed from one horrifically energy inefficient techno-fascist bubble to another without pause. Each outpacing renewables like clockwork

Huh 👀

A request from somebody in the USA: if you live in another country, please start pressuring your government to institute sanctions against the US.

Diplomatic sanctions, economic sanctions, whatever is possible.

I do not expect this to happen quickly. Start laying the political groundwork now so that it can happen at all, ever, while it still matters.

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell if it hasn’t already been mentioned, Cory Doctorow @pluralisticCory Doctorow has been presenting a great proposal for how smaller nations can hit the US power base where it hurts (while helping their own people) by taking advantage of Trump’s destruction of free trade treaties: treaties that locked the world into using monopolized American tech. The locks are gone now.

Thanks to Roy Tam, John Elliot and Microsoft OEM Adaptation kit, I managed to convert Windows 3 fonts to a format that Windows 1 display driver I'm using for this port can understand.

The font comes from Windows 3, but the pixel data is Windows 1 FNT, and it is stored in Windows 2 FON container created by Windows 2 RC.EXE

A screenshot of black-on-green emulated CRT running Windows 3. The screenshot uses Windows 3-style fonts

If you use an AI-generated image for your article/post, this indicates to me you might have also used AI-generated text.

If you use AI-generated text for your article/post then:

1- I have no idea if you verified the veracity of any claimed facts.

2- I have no idea what your own voice is.

3- I have no idea if this truly expresses your own views, and if you even cared to read it.

4- I have no idea what your intention is with this, other than exploiting my attention and clicks with the least amount of efforts on your part.

5- This shows me you have no respect at all for the labour that was stolen to build these tools, exploiting millions of artists and writers to make billions of dollars without any compensation to them whatsoever.

Why would I want to engage with any content like that?

• I don't want to communicate with a machine (I can do that by myself).

• I don't want to participate in this disgusting exploitation of artists and writers.

• And I want to communicate with another human, of course.

If your intention isn't to communicate with another human, then stop deceiving them making them think they are :no_ai:

i wish the tool was somehow more proactive about keeping the DAG in a good shape since it's one of most important project assets. i actually wouldn't mind spending time having convos about pieces of it and to making sure it captured all important research and decision points just right
