@Sunny My point is that if someone is purporting to be breaking news, and that person isn't a reporter who's reporting the story themselves, that news is coming from somewhere else (or it's made up). People need to be able to distinguish where the information is coming from and what context lets them know that.

"The ICT sector uses 12% of Switzerland’s electricity, according to the study, which considered all electronic devices for private and professional use (such as smartphones, tablets, laptops), as well as telecommunications networks and data centres in the country in 2024. The total electricity demand is just below the annual output of the Gösgen nuclear plant in western Switzerland."

On November 20th, women stop being paid compared to men.

This is the point in the year when,
on average,
women effectively work for free.

The gender pay gap is now 11.3%,
up from 10.7% last year.

It’s a stark reminder that while progress has been made,
gender pay inequality persists
- and may be higher than we thought.

My little cousin asked for an Amazon Echo believing that she could ask it to play any song, she was disappointed in finding out she needs a subscription for that.

I’m considering to teach her how to maintain a digital music library on her phone she could then play on Echo trough Bluetooth but in the last years I had little experience with Android. I need recommendations on a good and ad-free music player app with easy library management and maybe a great looking UI too. Free and paid options are both good but subscriptions are a deal breaker.

empire

it is always annoying to argue against western imperialism because it is sugarcoated with "we're bringing Freedom and Democracy™ to these people" so i'm kinda glad the white house people just said "yeah we're gonna drill the shit out of the place for oil"
i no longer look like a conspiracy theorist which is nice, but the empire is gonna take a lot of lives as it is imploding in real time

what a fucked up way to start the new year, i am so tired of living through major historical events

something i dont think a lot of tech workers have figured out yet: the tech industry isn’t in the business of making tech products anymore. they’re a banking/advertising empire with tech as a front business.

working at a FAANG company used to be this impressive thing because these companies were ostensibly doing all the most exciting innovation and hiring all the best software people to make it happen.

i dunno if that was ever actually true but it certainly hasn’t been true for years. these companies are not doing anything impressive or innovative in tech, they’re solely in the business of making money.

A freelance journalist friend of mine who writes about science and math has discovered that someone is using LLMs to impersonate him to try to get assignments.

Deeply creepy but also, um, being a freelance science journalist is about as lucrative as running a lemonade stand. Choice of scams here is woefully underthought.

Y’know, the recent discussion about the US world dominance relying on the petrodollar has me thinking: it sure is a coincidence that, since 2012, we’ve rocketed from one horrifically energy inefficient techno-fascist bubble to another without pause. Each outpacing renewables like clockwork

Huh 👀
