What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@ErickaSimone @Mastodon I'm building a new activitypub stack for commercial use by creators, & I'm starting on the moderation component. I'm one developer, & moderation is important but I am no expert. Who should I talk to, or where do you recommend I start? Stack is here codeberg.org/whythawk/hop-sauna

Thanks to James Garbutt for contributing a **massive** improvement in rendering performance. Benchmarking reports as high as 11x improvement 🤩. Upgrade to astro@5.16.7 when you can.

James gave an excellent explanation of the improvement in the PR: github.com/withastro/astro/pul

Open source ftw!

Do you see how rights and freedoms are removed from the people in the name of supposedly protecting the children,

But when actual child abuse happened from the powerful, whether literally or by proxy in the form of AI algorithms on popular commercial platforms, the same actors demanding child protections are completely silent?

1- Chat Control and Age Verification isn't about protecting the children, it's about surveilling and controlling us.

2- As long as the abuse is perpetrated in the name of "AI" or corporate profits, no laws or protections seem to apply anymore.

This should make everyone extremely angry, and should be enough to make everyone with a moral compass delete their account on X immediately.

Code is a liability (not an asset). Tech bosses don't understand this. They think AI is great because it produces 10,000 times more code but that means it's producing 10,000 more liabilities. AI is the asbestos we're shoveling into the walls of our high-tech society:

A shredder, shredding a giant US$100 bill. Benjamin Franklin's head has been replaced with a cliched 'hacker in a hoodie' illustration. The machine's faceplate bears the Claude Code wordmark. The background is the hostile red eye of HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey.'

I'm having trouble eating in the morning these days. One thing I can reliably eat is a cookie. I'm pulling up recipes for breakfast cookies and so many of them are like NO SUGAR NO BUTTER. Listen I want to be healthy but I also need life to be worth living ok

It's nice when a project gets to a state where it's so mature it doesn't really need a constant stream of changes/improvements. I don't spend much time on Projectile (github.com/bbatsov/projectile) these days, because I think it's in a pretty good shape overall, but occasionally there are bursts of activity like today. (several PRs merged)

"Resilience" has become a dark pattern. Ordinary resilience is a good thing, the ability to recoup from a setback.

"Resilience" as capitalist society frames it is the imperative to endure an endless series of existential challenges and remain produtive.
