What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Daughter just came home to tell me the teachers at school tried to confiscate her vape but they couldn't because it's actually a kazoo.

"I made a kazoo noise at them and I could see them dying on the inside so I made a sad kazoo noise instead. I don't think it helped."

The grin on her face.

A Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University:

“The Government of Canada could easily decide that it was going to use LinkedIn or Instagram or wherever it posts, and journalists would switch to following them there because they want to access what they’re saying,” he continued. “There was zero audience for Truth Social when

Trump created and started using it, but the audience went to the politician. Carney and his government could take a principled position by leaving X and its horrible spawn, Grok, and his audience of journalists and politicos would go with them.”

“Apparently, our political leaders simply choose not to.”

YES!!
As always a huge thank you for the Senator's @PaulaticsSenator Paula Simons🇨🇦 ongoing activism. It WILL happen. (and by it I mean, government going to the social web... Bluesky is just a temporary blip until it too goes fascist or we get some proper digital sovereignty laws in place.)

Still working on my little music player app from time to time. Finally got around today to adding a CoverFlow-like view to the iOS version for some retro vibes. And just like the original Apple version, it activates as soon as the device is rotated into landscape.

“I saw a gold SUV swoop in and grab the masked shooter and whisk him off while a woman died alone with no medical intervention on a street in an American city.

I put my phone away, but not before I wrote “Fuck ICE” on Facebook. I lost a few followers for that crass post, but I’m fresh out of nice words for the regime and the masked cowards killing people on the street.”

A new @iftas report brings insights from fediverse moderators, administrators, and community managers: worsening mod-to-user ratio, spam, burnout, lack of tools.

"Moderators are the backbone of a safer social web – but most are unpaid, under-supported, and under constant strain. If we want a future for decentralised platforms that respects user agency, civil speech, and community autonomy, we need to support the infrastructure that keeps it safe."

about.iftas.org/2026/01/08/the

I just want to thank everyone who continues to invest their time, money, and other resources into keeping the fediverse alive.

Here's to everyone, from admins and mods, who keep us safe, to shitposters, who keep us entertained, and everyone in-between, connecting with one another.

Grateful and happy to be part of this community!

Urgent request in Minneapolis / St. Paul:

Do you have info about business impacts of ICE activity?
→ UPDATE: Especially daycare closures! ←

For example:

- biz closed early last night?
- closed today?
- reduced hours today?
- staffing issues?
- significant loss of business?

A legal group is gathering info for some kind of urgent action today. If you have •personal• knowledge of any of these kinds of impacts, please reply or DM me and I will connect you.

“ASAP ASAP”, they say!

Wow, moving from GitHub to Codeberg is cool. Haven't run Gentoo for years now but still have a soft spot for it (I learned so much running it as main driver).

I also use Codeberg für my code (and joined the association) but we can't just "move everything to Codeberg". That's neither sustainable nor a good model. We should have more associations like Codeberg to offer those kinds of services. Create a whole web of forges for collaboration while we can watch GitHub go to hell.

US, ICE, etc.

Just want all my American friends (and people I don't know over there too) to know I'm thinking of them. With them. In solidarity.

I know that doesn't help you out much. It's almost just thoughts and prayers. But if a little moral support helps, then, why not say so.

I wish you all courage, strength and determination in this terrifying time.

These text scams are getting really scary even though I know it's a scam. Just WhatApp my wife from my IodeOS microg fairphone 4 and had the word ASDA in it at 18:48. Just got a text from a random number saying "Halifax card was used amount in the hundreds and declined call this london number"
Now I'm not stupid and I know it was a few pounds on a different debit card. But it is a big coicidence the same time I messaged her and the same supermarket ASDA? Surely I've not got anything dodgy on my mobile ? Could it be her spam ridden samsung that got my number and the words ASDA from the whatapp ???

EDIT She told me she didn't pay by card and used cash. So it must be something scanning her messages ?

With the federal government threatening to send ICE "door to door", here's a reminder:

"If an officer knocks on your door: Do not open the door. Teach your children not to open the door. Officers must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. ICE “warrants” are not signed by judges; they are ICE forms signed by ICE officers and they do not grant authority to enter a home without consent of the occupant(s)."
