What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I've been boycotting Samsung for years now. People outside Korea often seem surprised when I mention thisโ€”after all, Samsung is one of the most recognizable Korean brands globally. So let me explain.

It started after I read Think Samsung (ไธ‰ๆ˜Ÿ(์‚ผ์„ฑ)์„ ์ƒ๊ฐํ•œ๋‹ค) by Kim Yong-chul, a former Samsung lawyer turned whistleblower. The book exposed systematic corruption, slush funds, and how the conglomerate wielded its influence to evade accountability. It painted a picture of a company that operated as if it were above the law.

But what pushed me from mere dislike to active boycott was the 2015 merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. This wasn't just questionable corporate governanceโ€”it was engineered to help Lee Jae-yong consolidate control of the Samsung empire. The merger ratio heavily undervalued Samsung C&T, and the National Pension Service, despite its fiduciary duty to Korean citizens, voted in favor of it. Korean pensioners lost billions.

The whole affair later became central to the corruption scandal that brought down President Park Geun-hye. Lee Jae-yong was convicted of bribery. And yet Samsung continues as if nothing happened.

I'm under no illusion that my personal boycott hurts Samsung in any meaningful way. But some things aren't about effectiveness. They're about not being complicit.

I โค๏ธ the fediverse

A few of my contributions:
- Started GNU/Social AP support
- Started Pixelfed
- Inspired gargron to write the "How to implement a basic ActivityPub server"
- Tried to organize the first ActivityPub Conference (mastodon.social/@dansup/100286)
- Started the SocialHub forum (originally socialhub.network)
- Started fedidb.org
- Started fediverse.info

5 years on, I still feel so lucky to be a part of this.

13 years ago this evening, I sat down with some old friends of Aaron Swartz and together we actually looked through the filings in his criminal case.

We came away feeling, actually, pretty good. He clearly had some good representation; they were tearing pretty thoroughly into the government prosecutorโ€™s arguments. We thought things were looking good for him. We thought he could actually win.

The next morning I was awoken by a terrible phone call.

I was told that the US is running Venezuela now and it would be easy and there'd be lots of money... and now the US govt is telling Americans to get the hell out. These guys don't even know what a plan is. It's all just wish casting. It's incredible that they currently run the world.

In 2017 I started writing a GNU/social alternative, when ActivityPub came out in early 2018, I realized I made a big mistake by not handling remote users properly.

I almost gave up, but started researching the most popular social networks.

I was surprised Instagram was 3rd, and thought that was the easiest to replicate. I joined in 2014 but never used Instagram.

The next day, I started searching for a project name/domain. The .com/.net/.org had to be available.

This is just nightmare fuel to me.

๐Ÿค– AI Disclosure: This project is 100% AI-generated code. All Rust code, documentation, and configuration was written by Claude (Anthropic) via Cursor with MCP tools. My role is product direction, testing, and learning to orchestrate AI-assisted development effectively. The code is reviewed and tested, not blindly accepted โ€” but I want to be transparent about the development process. This project is partly a learning exercise in exploring how far AI-assisted development can go.

Every single response to Issues and PRs appears to also be generative. I see no oversight, no real safety nets whatsoever. And this is the future they want.
