What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@fosdem I'm sure you're well aware of the strike that's planned for the week leading up to FOSDEM. Maybe you want to share it on the website so folks traveling to Brussels can plan accordingly?

The people who just blindly toss AI shit over a wall onto other humans without using their brain for even a nanosecond deserve shaming. We need to start a public wall of shame for the public identities (not doxing) of these people so we can have bots that just block them.

I don't care at all if you do this in your own projects, but when you cross a boundary where another human has to interact with you, its common courtesy to at the very least spend any amount of time at all thinking (the horror).

"The makes all of this visible...unfolding in real time. We are watching a community take shape, with excitement, disagreement, and inevitable growing pains. Whether or not it fixes the internet is almost beside the point...in the Fediverse, community is not abstract. Community matters more than algorithms....It is intentional, contextual, and deeply shaped by where you choose to belong. And there is space, even if you have too many faces." maho.dev/2026/01/the-forkivers

Watching the come online is a good model of how to populate the Fediverse. One reason why a2mi.social has lasted for all these years is because we started with a core group of people who all wanted to talk to each other. It sidesteps the empty room problem.

I still expect a lot of people to drop off after the newness wears out but I also suspect a core group will stick around and slowly grow.

They're gonna tell you the is a community but if you really want that, start a server.

Every fedi server is less a place than a portal to a shared space nobody controls and whose culture is only what most of the people hanging out there decide. Your choice of portal is mostly about the protection spell you want cast upon you as you walk through. The moderation rules and enforcement processes that somewhat filter what you're able to see. But no algos will assault you here.

This week I’m thinking back to this powerful quote (long-circulating, origin unclear):

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person”

and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “If you won’t respect me I won’t respect you,” and what they mean is “If you won’t treat me like an authority then I won’t treat you like a person.”

I just discovered that @palaisdetokyo joined the fediverse at the end of last year with little fan fare. I see they still haven't added a social link to the bottom of their website either but they did verify their URL here which is more then many institutions.

I added their account to @wikidata so maybe they will now automatically show up now on various account viewing websites that source from there.

It’s not easy being a male Anna’s hummingbird: hovering with your wings moving 50 beats per second, flashing your gorget to defend the aloe, feeding every 10 minutes in order to have enough nutrition to survive, and positioning yourself in the most complicated lighting situation for the guy who’s trying to photograph you.
