What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Tonight's speculation game: if you went back in time to the early 1700s and wanted to win the Longitude Prize for making a clock that kept time at sea, what would you do? You have your modern knowledge (and offline wikipedia on your phone).
I don't think you can make an atomic clock. There just isn't the refining or the electronics. But I wonder about a quartz oscillator. You can do that by cutting a thin piece of quartz and having a battery (which you can make with copper and vinegar), I think?

I was booked to play a small tent at a festival years ago. I turned up and there was some kind of booking clash so I ended up playing in front of thousands of people. I cleared the tent within 30 minutes. No idea who I was meant to be but I had a great time.

Great news that forkiverse accounts are going to have their 7-day waiting period waived for bridging. Shows what a cool little instance this is, it's reputation precedes it ✨

error: symbol lookup error: undefined symbol: DllMain (fatal)

Hey, question: If I encounter this error from ld on Linux, would I be reacting correctly if my blood instantaneously turned to ice?

Making some progress on my Terminal UI prototype. Lots of controls done already, but it is going to require quite some polishing work. Very rough for now but it is promising! ✨️

My automatic tracking dependencies is working but it has been tricky to allow dynamic visuals created based on state changes without rebuilding the whole UI. Func<Visual> are called only if something is reading a property that is changed. It's cool but tracking dependencies bugs are quite difficult to chase down! 🐛

Saw something kinda fascinating the other day: a BBS-native comic was being labelled the "first webcomic”. Which makes me wonder if "webcomic" has transcended the "web" at this point, so something pre-internet that’s never been on the web counts.
