What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

This message is intended for Canadian admins who are running public instances large and small. If you are an admin, please share with your counterparts. If you are a member of a Canadian instance, please send this to your admin.
A small group of us (Note: really, really small) are in early discussions on how to encourage our government - individual politicians & federal, provincial, and municipal departments - to move their social media presence to Mastodon. This would involve an awareness campaign targeting politicians, party HQs, and departments/agencies.
We are asking for input from admins to help us create a future state vision for this project, and provide us with advice or ideas on how to bring it to a reality. I will set up a web call within the next 3 weeks and hopefully you can participate. We are not asking you to contribute beyond input. Please DM me and I will add you to the invitees.

Probably old news but if you ever want to make a nice looking table out of pipe delimited columns in *any* buffer eg.
| a | b |
| c | defg |
...

Just highlight it and call M-x org-table-align. No extra packages needed, and you don't need to be in an org-mode buffer, it works everywhere!

Tonight's speculation game: if you went back in time to the early 1700s and wanted to win the Longitude Prize for making a clock that kept time at sea, what would you do? You have your modern knowledge (and offline wikipedia on your phone).
I don't think you can make an atomic clock. There just isn't the refining or the electronics. But I wonder about a quartz oscillator. You can do that by cutting a thin piece of quartz and having a battery (which you can make with copper and vinegar), I think?

I was booked to play a small tent at a festival years ago. I turned up and there was some kind of booking clash so I ended up playing in front of thousands of people. I cleared the tent within 30 minutes. No idea who I was meant to be but I had a great time.

Great news that forkiverse accounts are going to have their 7-day waiting period waived for bridging. Shows what a cool little instance this is, it's reputation precedes it ✨
