M104: The Sombrero Galaxy in Infrared

This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenic Sombrero Galaxy, one of the largest galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The dark band of dust that obscures the mid-section of the Sombrero Galaxy in visible light actually glows brightly in infrared light.

The featured image, digitally sharpened, shows the infrared glow, recently recorded by the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope, superposed in false-color on an existing image taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in visible light. The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, spans about 50,000 light years and lies 28 million light years away. M104 can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of the constellation Virgo.

A 23-year-old student was shot in the head from close range during the anti-government protests in Iran.

Rubina Aminian attended Shariati College in Iran’s capital, Tehran, where she studied textile and fashion design. She is one of the only people killed in the recent demonstrations to be identified.

Sasha Montelli says that the floating ice shelf that the iceberg broke away from has retreated inland by about 25 miles (40 km) over the past 50 years—just one example of accelerating ice loss on the continent. “The ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a major contributor to sea level rise worldwide,” Montelli said in the recent press release. “Our work is critical for providing longer-term context of these recent changes, improving our ability to make projections of future change.”

Some of the creatures are new species, and many may only be found near Antarctica. Beyond simply being remote, the continent has been isolated for millions of years by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which surrounds it like a moat around a castle.

Behold the caracal (Caracal caracal) and its stylish ear tassels. Some scientists think that this cat twitches its tufts to communicate with others (in addition to meowing, purring, hissing, and other feline vocalizations). It’s the fastest cat of its size, running up to 50 mph (80.5 km/h), and can jump as high as 10 ft (3 m)! In fact, this hunter has a reputation for jumping up to swat birds out of the air for a meal.

출근시 잠실역 인근의 빌딩 화장실을 자주 이용하는데 여기는 여름에 에어컨을 가동해서 시원하고, 겨울에는 난방시설이 잘 작동되어 매우 따뜻합니다. 오늘은 너무 따뜻한 나머지 이불 깔고 자고싶더군요. 미친소리인거 알아요. 그만큼 오늘도 피로합니다. 이불속이 그립습니다.

中学の修学旅行が「コロナが流行りだして自粛ムードにはなっていたが、まだ緊急事態ではない」くらいのタイミングだったので、「観光客が全然いない京都」とかいう今後二度と体験できないであろうものを体験できたのはとてもよかった
