Bestie asked me today for a book about US history from 1870-1900.

I pointed out that there was a lot going on during that time, and could she be more specific about her particular interest. I then listed about 30 facts of US history from 1870-1900, everything from the retreat from Reconstruction to the 25m immigrants to the transition first into an industrial powerhouse and then into a global power to the early Populist movements in the west to the finalization of the indigenous nations.

Douglas Adams once said something, answering a question from a fan about whether Arthur Dent was a “hero”, and whether the Hitchhiker stories were “gaily whimsical” or cynical. The whole thing won't fit here (see: https://shreevatsa.net/post/douglas-adams-cultural-divide/) but quoting the main part:

Problem: LLMs can't defend against prompt injection.

Solution: A specialized filtering model that detects prompt injections.

Problem: That too is susceptible to bypass and prompt injection.

Solution: We reduce the set of acceptable instructions to a more predictable space and filter out anything that doesn't match.

Problem: If you over-specialize, the LLM won't understand the instructions.

Solution: We define a domain-specific language in the system prompt, with all allowable commands and parameters. Anything else is ignored.

Problem: We just reinvented the CLI.
