What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I despise YouTube's forced autotranslated video titles with the passion of a trillion burning suns. I pay for YouTube Premium, but I'm not sure for how long that's going to last.

The alternative YouTube frontends are all trash, so they're not a solution. I want to be logged in, and I do not want to use weird proxies or VPNs or whatever other bullshit those require.

This New York Times video journalism -- caution, it's graphic -- about Trump goons' murder of a Minneapolis woman is essential. No both-sides bullshit when one party -- the regime and its vile propagandists -- is relentlessly and provably lying.

I'm often hard on the Times for its relentless failures to properly cover this regime, but this piece is the real thing.

Look, I get that there's probably a lot of decisions that go into writing a headline, but surely this:

> The Verge also reported that it was still “extremely easy to undress women and edit them into sexualized poses using the X and Grok mobile apps or websites.” A reporter from the outlet based in the UK noted she was not blocked from using the app or creating “sexualized deepfakes of herself.”

Means your headline should be more along the lines of, "X Did Not Stop Generating Sexualized Images of People" instead of just directly quoting twitter's comms team?

"Others said they have been watchful of the skies and seas around Greenland, tracking US planes on flight trackers and even discussing plans on how best to respond if they were captured. Many said they were suffering from anxiety and struggling to sleep."
And this is why 'We Are Never Fucking Trusting You Again'

You prob know this already, but if you duck-search, you can go to a slightly different entry point at noai.duckduckgo.com to do web searches without AI slop dumping on you.

I see they've dressed up the landing page their! Now more obviously non-AI. I mean, it's a selling feature, so yeah, go to town guys.

(if you still google things, consider the duck search! it's worked well for me for years, and the non-ai version is a nice step forward).

The landing page has huge letters saying NO AI with a cameo of a duck. Smaller boxes note that AI-assisted answers and AI-generated images are removed as well.

“In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.”

at this rate by the end of 2026, Bluesky will be 80% features that are not supported by ATProto and will never become decentralized in any way, yet tech pundits will still be calling it a decentralized platform for some reason

A post by the official Bluesky account on Bluesky:

"📢 v1.114 is rolling out!

Today, we're expanding access to the Live Now beta to everyone.

This experimental feature lets you add a temporary LIVE badge to your avatar, helping others discover that you're currently live-streaming on Twitch. They can click it to land directly on your stream page.”

There's PyConDE/PyConIT community voting going on this weekend.

If you've visited one of those conferences in the last years, you can vote (even if you can't come this time). By voting you can influcence which talks will be available for you to watch online later in the year - and you get a good overview on what's hot this year.

Mastodon is looking for recruiting support to help us hire two exceptional backend engineers for multiple ambitious projects. More news on the specifics and the job description to follow soon.

This is a rare opportunity to work closely with our team on a non-technical project. If you might be interested in this or know someone, please get in touch. Ideally this should be fully or partially pro bono and start end of January.
