Have you seen what entered the public domain this year? The Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law has a great list, which includes these books among many others:

Agatha Christie, The Murder at the Vicarage (the first novel featuring Miss Marple)
Carolyn Keene (pseudonym for Mildred Benson), the first four Nancy Drew books, beginning with The Secret of the Old Clock
Dorothy L. Sayers, Strong Poison

Nancy Drew! Dorothy Sayers! Agatha Christie! All books I’ve read, often many years ago.

But the one that most grabbed my attention was one I’ve not seen mentioned on other reporting: Elson Basic Readers (the first appearances of Dick and Jane). I grew up with Dick and Jane, although not this edition.

I paged through and saw that, yes indeed, the dog Spot was there, too. But there’s also a cat named Little Mew, which I don’t remember seeing in any of the books I read.

There will never be an AI tool that
is truly private unless it hasn't trained on nonconsensual data.

Even if a platform were able to
create the perfect protections for its users' prompts and results,

If the platform is built from or utilizing an AI model that was trained on or is updated and optimized with data that was scraped from millions of people without their consent, then of course this platform isn't "privacy-respectful."

How could it be?

The company is saying:
"We respect the privacy of our users while they are using our platform, but outside of it, it's fair game."

Users thinking they are using a privacy-respectful platform are in fact saying:

"Privacy for me and not for thee,"

And are directly contributing to the platform needing to scrape even more nonconsensual data to improve.

Always ask: Where the training data comes from?

Without the assurance that a platform only uses AI models that have only been training on data acquired ethically, it is not a privacy-respectful platform.

Looking for a recommendation on ultra-light eating utensils. Due to a timing mishap on my part I'll be attending FOSDEM this year with an insecure front crown (the permanent replacement will not be ready until after I'm already on the way). It's already fallen out once and when it was put back in they said to cut everything up really small when eating. So, I am looking for a very light sturdy travel utensil kit for my backpack that is also easy to keep clean.

Did I need the silly two-screen laptop? No. Am I delighted with the build and OLED screen quality, surprised how useable the touchscreen keyboard-and-touchpad Lenovo wrote for it is, and happy that a decent amount works in Linux out of the box? Yes.

We saw it early in the pandemic, in every climate shock & now in Minneapolis. The impulse of most people in a crisis is to share, connect & protect, often at risk to the self. Capitalism and existing power structures have trouble comprehending it and then often try to undermine it

The #forkiverse seems like a good model for expanding the fediverse: instances based on existing audiences.

Hear me out. Fanbases have an automatic sense of community. They are more likely to be politically/culturally similar. Users already like the admin (e.g. the podcast host). The admin can’t be a tyrant, because the users are also their audience.

And there’s that last hard-to-describe ingredient. That sense of energy and momentum. “Hey, come join, we’re starting something together!”
