We’re highlighting an article from the latest issue of the FreeBSD Journal.

Christos Margiolis walks through how audio is handled on FreeBSD, covering drivers, device management, troubleshooting, and the architectural decisions that shape the system’s sound stack.

It’s an informative read for anyone interested in how FreeBSD manages audio at a low level or looking to better understand the tools available for tuning and debugging sound.

Quick question...

I've been trying to fix a knackered old Dell laptop for my neighbour's 13 year old daughter. It was obviously important that it looks good.

But I've just spoken to a friend who gave me a Mac laptop for work (that's finished) which will obviously be way cooler (and I don't use it apart from for rolling joints).

So he's happy for me to give her the Mac, but it's a UK QWERTY keyboard. Is there any way to change to a French AZERTY keyboard expediently? She'll be really chuffed if we can do this.

Paging @iFixit

Boosts much appreciated!

Jeff Bezos is saying the quiet part out loud. They want to kill local computing.

You will own nothing and be happy. You will rent your computing power from the cloud. You pay a subscription for the privilege of using a computer.

AI demand is artificially spiking DRAM prices and Big Tech is pushing "AI PCs," the squeeze is on to force us into a rental model.

Reject this future. :NoAI:

Keep your hardware local.

Run . :tux:

Own your data.

The "cloud" is just a landlord for your data.

They canceled the Minneapolis LEGO Robotics tournament over general safety concerns. Not that the tournament was even targeted; it’s just so ICEy here.

The kids had made custom T-shirts for their teams and everything.

I know this is just one little thing, a footnote to what’s happening, but…fuck all the Nazis.

Holy shit folks! A big breakthrough tonight! I got my iPhone 5 to sync with my !!

This was never allowed by Apple as Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the official minimum OS required by iPhone 5. But I knew this limitation was artificial as my iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 are both running iOS 6.1.3... so what could the actual difference be???

This is my first reverse engineering project and it ended up being only a 1 character change, but it took many many many hours in GDB to figure out which character. I promise I will write a blog post.

But in the mean time, please enjoy the screenshots while I buy myself a 64GB iPhone 5 so I can get some content synced!

“It is a good step for people to take,” EFF’s Hayley Tsukayama told @APNews of California’s new DROP tool for requesting removal of personal information held by more than 500 data brokers. Stronger laws restricting data collection would be even better. apnews.com/article/california-

For my weekly thoughts, I thought about a band that I've almost no connection with, and yet has always been there. And I surprised myself at how detailed I got, but I wanted to account for this wider moment we're in too. Perhaps the first and last time I'll ever write about the patreon.com/posts/148298211

"I don’t know how many people have been killed in the recent protests and what is happening in my county." "The goddamn Unity engine does not work without internet properly, Figma wont open, Google Doc, Google Sheets, OneDrive, Google Drive, Atlassian could, Git, SVN, TeamCity, Microsoft365, all AI services, and all goddamn online systems are down."
