What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Mastodon

Let me try again: this was not supposed to be a dunk or a prompt to opine about how much AI sucks. No shade if you did that, I definitely wasn't clear. I'm genuinely looking for the best pro-AI engagement with the ethical dimensions of this problem.

The joys of working on an open source project that interfaces to obscure, sometimes obsolete hardware: regression testing is almost impossible.

Sure, we can catch regressions in the GUI easily. But if a big fix to a driver breaks things for a different scope supported by that driver, there's no way to test without having one of those scopes around to validate things against.

And there's way too many models of instrument out there for building any kind of CI cluster to be practical in a reasonable amount of space or budget.

I really have a love/hate relationship with

On the plus side, it's unbelievably capable and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface. On a daily basis it nerd-snipes me into taking better notes and being more organized in my life, both professionally and personally. It's so fucking fun to explore around and see what else it can do

On the down side, sooooo many 3rd party plugins exist _primarily_ to make up for inscrutable UX design decisions

E.g., there are so many plugins that are essentially hacks around Obsidian's nonsensical tab behavior. Why would I want the same note open in 3 or 4 (or more!) tabs at once if I ALREADY HAVE IT OPEN? Just take me to the tab where it’s open!

Want to create a new note _in the folder_ currently open and selected in explorer view? Well...if you want to use a hotkey or command palette…wait for it…there's a plugin for that

Periodic reminder: I've already said many times that I think Fediverse (or at least a future flavor of it) wins in the end. It's too asymmetrically powerful in its ability to resist centralized pressure from very rich fashy tech bros. The inter-instance infighting and Fediverse drama of the month that we lament, is actually its strength.

This has very little to do with *technical* decentralization. It is about *social* decentralization. Mastodon mega instances are not socially decentralized. But the human building blocks for evolving to many smaller instances, are there.

And every time another social media platform messes up, there is a net flow of users towards alternatives, usually Fediverse, but often other platforms too. So if BlueSky does one day flip and turn just like Twitter, there will be a flow from there to here too.

So yay, Fediverse wins in the end. But we're not at the end. We're not even in the middle. Fediverse is still not ready to be the place.

There are things to learn from BlueSky. I'm not interested in having a debate on this with anyone. If you don't think that there is anything to learn, then fine. I respect your opinion. But please keep that opinion out of my mentions.

If you're selfish enough to think "Fediverse works for me, and don't really care if millions of Black people aren't welcome here, and therefore have to use other platforms that also mistreat them," also fine. But again, please keep that opinion out of my mentions. I'm not Charlie Kirk and I'm not Steven Crowder. I don't want to debate you. I don't want to try to change your mind. And you won't change mine.

Because nothing you say will get me to stop supporting Fediverse and ATProto safety projects.

I'm stubborn like that.
