An important PSA for people who are active on and who, upon hearing that the ICE account was officially verified, are saying: "I will just block it."

Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.

I took a screenshot from clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).

The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

a screenshot of the site ClearSky updating in real time the Bluesky accounts that are blocking ICE. The page reads "U.S. immigration and customs enforcement" blocked by 72233 (accounts) with the date of the block... some seconds ago

Creativity is like a muscle. If you want to become more creative, you have to exercise it.

When I was in art school (years ago), we exercised every day to become more creative. Artists have to train to get there too. It's not magic or "talent," it's hard work.

When you use AI to give you "inspiration," you are doing the opposite of that. You are atrophying your creativity muscle.

If you want to become a creator, and become more creative, you should stop using AI entirely. Instead, start training your own genuine creativity. Otherwise, it will eventually dry off completely.

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: People who have attended CES keynotes for years say this year’s were notably lame and much worse than any past year they’ve attended. Hard to know why, so this is speculation, but I wonder if the AI companies (most of those doing the keynotes) are run by people who have atrophied notably over the last 365 days and now they are quite literally less able to do a keynote.

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Here's the best I can figure:

  • These stories are often told well, whch means realistic characters in all roles.
  • These stories are meant as morality plays and discussions of tricky concepts. But again, they are told well, so the mechanics of the enemy's interactions make a lot of sense as well.
  • Here's where I think the break is: For Scifi, we often see "This behavior and enabling technology can cause this problem. Be mindful of that." On that SAME situation, TechBro's see "This behavior and technology can enable that control. Take advantage of that."
  • Flipping that, we have "This behavior and enabling technology can help you navigate this problem" , which naturally flips to "This behavior and technology could enable others to escape. Be mindful of that".

The key difference here is which the different viewers see as the desirable role and outcome. We don't want to be in 1984. They want to run 1984.

President Trump announces that from Feb. 1, there’ll be a 10% tariff on all goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands and Finland, increasing to 25% on June 1, until a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland by the US.

"Ever since Trump took office and turned over immigration enforcement to someone who killed pets more often than she’s experienced moments of joy, the world has been shrinking. It's America vs. everyone else at this point, with the Trump administration adding hefty amounts of imperialism to its heady blend of white Christian fascism": DHS Expands Immigration Ban, Ensuring The Only Way An African Can Come To The US Is If We Bring Slavery Back techdirt.com/2026/01/15/dhs-ex

A question of knives:

Prompted by a post by @intrepedhero, I started wondering. The author photo of a linked article showed a large knife prominently attached to his backpack strap. I camp, day hike, sometimes backpack or bikepack, but I don’t hunt or fish. In nearly 6 decades of playing outdoors, I can’t recall having ever needed more of a knife in the wild than the small folding pocket knife I always carry. So my questions:

Do you carry a fixed blade knife in the wild? Why? Have you ever used it for anything, and if so, what?
