"One way to read the occupation of Minnesota is as a flex — a demonstration of the government’s power and authority. That, perhaps, is how [Stephen] Miller and Kristi Noem see the situation. I smell, on the other hand, a stench of desperation, an attempt to do with force what they can’t accomplish through ordinary politics."

~ Jamelle Bouie

18 years ago, we started ProPublica to do hard-hitting, rigorous journalism that exposes wrongdoing and injustice.

If you have a tip related to the Trump administration, we want to hear it.

Here's how to contact our reporters securely: propublica.org/tips

James Fallows offers a primer on Trump and Greenland:

1) This crisis is all coming from someone’s gut. Not from anyone’s brain.

2) The US has nothing to gain by ‘owning’ Greenland. Zero.

3) No one wants us there. Zero.

4) Greenland is smaller than you think. But the distances and remoteness are larger.

5) The whole idea of taking over Greenland would appall the founders of our country.

"If you want to be terrified for America’s future, look at what Trump’s Homeland security thugs are doing in Minnesota.

But if you want to be inspired for America’s future, look at how ordinary Minnesotans refuse to be terrorized.

Minnesota, right now, is where Americans are bravely, resolutely, and boisterously living out King’s words in 'Letter From Birmingham Jail.'"

often when you see messaging like "we all need to do our part" it's a kind of cynical justification for cutting some essential, centralized, mostly-efficient public service in favor of an ad-hoc, individualist approach that externalizes the issue and disclaims responsibility for neglect and poor outcomes. if you protest such a change, or suggest that perhaps some problems are better dealt with collectively by pooling resources, then it must be you who are lacking the collective spirit!

Dear FOSS Community 👋,

I’m researching Open Source funds and support programs that directly pay FOSS maintainers or contributors (not just offering mentorship), similar to the Fellowship program by @sovtechfundSovereign Tech Agency

I’m especially looking for programs that:
- are aimed at FOSS maintainers or contributors (not only students),
- focus on paid support and
- offer funding for at least 3 months.

If you know of any funds, organizations, or initiatives like this, please comment (or boost). Thanks :)

RE: social.coop/@cwebber/115922491

This is a fascinating change of thinking.
Ronacher was a very explict all-in AI guy and now comes to many of the points critics have been making for years (without acknowledging any of course). He still cushions all criticism but it's revealing that he himself uses phrases like "psychosis"

Hi everyone! We’re excited to share some updates:

Bonfire 1.0.1 is out! 🎉
This release is all about making your social web experience livelier, more connected, and truly yours. It brings features like following hashtags, scheduled posts, dashboard widgets, and more. This is the very first delivery from the maintenance work funded by your incredible support. Thank you for helping us reach this milestone and keep Bonfire thriving!

For details about the release see our latest blog post: Bonfire 1.0.1: Building Momentum

What’s next for crowdfunding?

If you're an existing backer, the pledge manager is now open. Please keep an eye out for updates there so we can start preparing rewards for you.

The campaign is open again for the next month. With core maintenance funded, every new pledge (or increased pledge from existing backers) now goes directly toward our first stretch goal: federated groups. Support or share our extended campaign to help fund community-owned, cross-instance spaces for real collaboration and self-governance.

Bonus good news: Thanks to a new grant, end-to-end encrypted messaging in Bonfire is now funded and in development!

Thank you once again for being part of the Bonfire movement! Your feedback, support, and community spirit make all of this possible. If you have questions or want to get involved, reach out or come say hello at FOSDEM if you’re in Brussels at the end of January!

With gratitude,
The Bonfire Team

"Overnight we learned that Donald Trump sent an ominous letter to Norway suggesting war could be on the table over Greenland as he is upset that Norway did not award him the Nobel Prize."
