What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

there is really no better demonstration for what is possible on an open platform when many people use and prefer a third-party algorithm running on somebody's home gaming rig but it also feels a bit like shooting yourself in the foot before showing you learned how to fly

earlier this month, I left the employer I've worked at for over 8 years. I meant to go back to self-employment after 2 years, but kept learning in an incredible environment, and I stayed there for over 8.

now I'm returning to what I was doing before: helping a lot of orgs solve their software problems through my consulting company! I can help with software development, filling in leadership/management, scaling/perf problems, web app security, and rust dev/training

This is alarming.

Our experience in Australia with bickering between the states over the starved & failing Murray river shows that even when the catastrophes are local we do not deal with them well.

As with all aspects of the global polycrisis, ‘It’s mine! You can’t have it!’ Is not the answer. Sadly this appears to be the only response our politicians know. Or that our media approve.

There will be huge movements of populations as local ecosystems collapse. It seems to me that the belligerent climate deniers of the far right have always known this. The cruel & aggressive actions they’ve taken to police borders have been a preemptive response to the catastrophes they’ve always known are coming.

We have been successfully distracted by the sideshows these clowns run & the fatuous team sport reporting delivered by our media.

How do we shift this?

Am I wrong to think that when I see emoji arrows like → in a social media or blog post, that it was generated by AI? The whole "bullet list of emoji characters" is already an AI smell for me. Am I just old? Do people actually like that? Or are they copy/pasting the emojis that AI generates?

has stopped paying for detainee medical treatment

ICE halted payments in October, and the situation will persist for at least several more months

by Judd Legum, Jan 20, 2026

Excerpt: "In lawsuits, numerous ICE detainees with severe illnesses allege that they cannot obtain treatment. For example, Viera Reyes, a detainee being held at ICE’s California City Detention Facility, has symptoms and test results that suggest he has prostate cancer.

"But despite often being in excruciating pain, Reyes cannot obtain a biopsy. All of his requests to see a urologist have been ignored. Without a biopsy, Reyes has no formal diagnosis and cannot begin chemotherapy or take other steps to slow the cancer’s progression. Reyes was one of seven ICE detainees to sue over inhumane conditions at the California City facility."

The last thing anyone needs is a new "platform" for microblogging. The whole point is we should be moving beyond silo'd platforms into an open social world. So my response to the launch of "W" as a competing platform to "X" is simply: "but Y, tho?" cybernews.com/tech/europe-...

Bye, X: Europeans are launchin...
