Working on a service which uses ts-rest and zod to infer types everywhere, instead of typing out explicit interfaces. This is reinforcing my belief that things which are done implicitly are usually done worse.

It’s really rough figuring out the signatures of values and methods here. Everything is coupled to everything else (in terms of understanding what type of data I’m working with at any given time.)

It feels like there are two distinct camps of programmers: ones who are afraid of writing down the type of data that they’re working with, and ones who do not care about type safety. There’s so few tools which give end-to-end type safety but still encourage you to write types explicitly.

Anyone experimenting with LoRA mesh nodes, very impressed with Meshcore here in Southern California (in particular, ability to get a message some distance with acknowledgement). I'm switching all my nodes over from Meshtastic. I was getting almost no delivery and no hops on Meshtastic, but getting out reliably on meshcore. Make sure you have your area's frequency settings correct, defaults don't work. #meshcore #lora

The enshittification of computer repair is happening.

AI has amazingly managed to make repairable computers practically worthless.

The increase in memory and storage pricing is destroying the second-hand market for computing hardware and this makes me sad. I watched a video from someone that runs a repair shop, and this is what's happening:

The memory/storage alone is worth more than the rest of the computer, so people are stripping them out to sell separately.

The second hand market is now flooded with computers that have no memory or storage. Buying new memory or storage to put in these used computers is now more expensive than buying a new computer.

So we now suddenly have a giant e-waste problem PLUS a giant problem for repair shops that want to stay in business.

In the video, he was basically saying that they have to pivot to the only computers that folks aren't stripping RAM and storage out of - computers that have those things soldered on. The irony here is that repair shops now have to ignore the most repairable computers and focus on the least repairable computers instead.

Over the past 20 years I've lived and went through the Docker, OpenStack and Kubernetes hype cycles (amongst others) and now there's AI.

Everything was so much simpler when it was all about LAMP stacks on dumb dedicated servers.

I'm tired.
