What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

You wouldn't host your community in a casino.

Addictive algorithms, amplified hateful content, doomscrolling. It's time to call social media what it is: dangerous.

As a society, we need to work harder to detangle ourselves from these places and the behaviour they encourage.

How are you creating distance between yourself and harmful social media?

I don’t want to contribute to the frontend engineer vs backend engineer mud slinging, but I have to say, denigrating each other’s areas of expertise really cuts both ways.

So many frontend engineers seem to think of backends as just a cache for the frontend’s data, maybe with a few simple transformations sprinkled in here and there. Hoo boy does this fall apart hard when the illusion is shattered by changes in the system’s requirements. Starting out with the cache mindset can lead to really inflexible designs and terrible interfaces, which are much harder to repair than just building a backend which enforces its own structure from the start.

This isn’t just a case of engineers being bad at what they don’t have experience with, either. There’s so many frameworks and cloud services which promise to make backends unnecessary, fueling and profiting from the delusion.

@becomethewaifuEmelia/Emi @whitequark✧✦Catherine✦✧ sounds like it starts with part of a V.8bis handshake - a response tone pair followed by (I'm guessing) CR_d, Es_r, and part of a CL packet. It then abruptly switches to the end of a standard V.8 handshake (a bit of the last CM plus the ending CJ) before entering V.34/V.90 probing/ranging.

Given the abrupt cut between two different protocols as well as the added reverb, I don't know how easy it'd be to demodulate anything from this.

That being said, my gut instinct says this is the same recording used in Oona Räisänen's "The sound of the dialup, pictured" post.

I do appreciate all the work the EU has done with regulatory work around data sovereignty and the DMA. But they would still be gigafucked if the US ordered Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to cut them off. They may not even have the encryption keys accessible entirely in the EU. The fact that their data physically resides in Europe don't mean shit if a US corp can kill their whole infrastructure with a single command to lock their accounts.

Nazi Germany didn't start with camps.
It started with loyalty tests, enemies within, attacks on the press, and people saying "this won't last."

It was built while people waited for it to get "bad enough" to matter. Waiting was a decision.

If this feels uncomfortably familiar right now, that's not an accident.

중고로 이북 리더기 사봤는데 읽는게 화면보단 종이 느낌이라서 읽기 편한 건 맞는 듯?
이제 이걸로 미뤄둔 백합 소설 만화를 하나씩 해결하면 되는 건가..?!?!

NEW: A private autopsy shows Renée Good was shot at least 3 times — in the arm, breast, and left temple/head, with the head wound likely fatal. Two of those wounds weren’t immediately life-threatening. The gunshot wound to the head was through-and-through, exiting her right side.

This is what “use of force” looks like in America. How is this justified? nytimes.com/2026/01/21/us/rene
