Fire in the sky: one awesome cover for a lovely issue of Dragon magazine.

This is easily my favourite cover of all the ones I've seen of the sadly long-departed Dragon. March 1989's spectacular cover always evokes images of Shadowrun's Awakening event, especially of the air battles with Fierschwinge as she appeared over Germany.

But yeah, gorgeous stuff from artist Denis Beauvais.

There's also a bit of a landmark article on Pools of Radiance, with AD&D video games truly coming of age to the mag's delight.

A photo of a cover of Dragon Magazine march 1989 issue, with a gorgeous illustration of a classic red dragon in a cloudy night sky as seen through the cockpit glass canopy with a bank of instruments and a joystick 'n; pilot in view, kind of like Wing Commander. The dragon is in the sights of a fighter jet engaging it in a dogfight. Dragon kill markings are etched on the glass.

Ghostty has a really well-balanced AI usage policy. It doesn't ban AI tools outright, but it sets clear boundaries to prevent the common problems we're seeing in open source contributions these days.

What stands out is that it's not about being anti-AI. The policy explicitly says the maintainers use AI themselves. The rules are there because too many people treat AI as a magic button that lets them contribute without actually understanding or testing what they're submitting. The requirement that AI-generated PRs must be for accepted issues only, fully tested by humans, and properly disclosed feels like basic respect for maintainers' time.

I'm thinking of adopting something similar for my projects, even though they're not at Ghostty's scale yet. Better to set expectations early.

What I'm listening to today: "Sarah Belle Reid plays the Buchla Touché"

I think of myself as pretty informed on "weird" synths and this one is, to me, REALLY WEIRD.

This is a hyper-rare (they made four. ever) synth, one of the earliest computer-controlled synths, you could reprogram its behaviour using a one-off Forth-like developed just for this device and for this track they made it… not… act like… a piano.

It's… otherworldly. IMO remove all distractions to watch it

can pol

An ocean scientist I know lost her federal government job this week. Canada should be scooping up American scientists left and right, not firing our scientists!! She works on carbon observation in the ocean, which is, you know, really fucking important. Everyone else who works on it on the west coast also got cut

Maybe a good time to reach out to your MPs and ask how the fuck we're supposed to be a world leader or whatever if federal scientists are fired and univerities are all drowning?

my husband's new Windows 11 computer suddenly stopped outputting audio to the 3.5mm headphones.

I clicked the audio troubleshooting button in Settings. It did not send me to the troubleshooter, but instead redirected me to install a help app. (yes, it wasn't even pre-installed.)

The help app told me to click the audio troubleshooter button.

Satya Nadella owes me three billion dollars in emotional damages.

(we've fixed the audio problem by unplugging the USB microphone and rebooting. before you @ me self-righteously about someone else's operating system which was chosen in accordance with THEIR needs and not mine and certainly not yours, consider whether I might react with the fury of ten thousand suns)

The Crimean Tatar movement trying to ruin Russia’s army from within

On the weekend, a power cut shut down a train line carrying Russian weapons and supplies to the front line through the region of Bryansk in western Russia near the Ukrainian border.

But this was no ordinary blackout. It was caused by a fire at a nearby substation set by an agent of the Ukrainian resistance movement, .

Lol, even the open source LLM projects are banning vibe coded contributions: github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp/

They had previously had a policy of "all AI assisted contributions need to be human reviewed before submitting them", but got too many people breaking that rule and submitting fully vibe coded contributions, and even trying to use their chatbots to answer questions about the PRs, so are now actively using the AGENTS.md file to instruct the chatbots to not write code for them and warn them about the policy.

End of my 3rd week on

I've not experienced social media like this before. People seeing my posts? And replying? Madness! And no robot deciding that my won’t infuriate anyone and so hiding them?

The people here have been super nice too. Sharing their own cats, giving me helpful tips, and replying with positivity. You're a real likeable bunch of weirdos

So I'll probably stick around, if that's okay….?

Here's another picture of Max sleeping... OR IS HE?

A close-up of a black cat's face. He is lying on a cushion with his head tilted so his chin is slightly raised. His eye is half open and looking at the camera, because the person taking the shot is rudely interrupting his sleep

so it turns out that when VS Code asks you “do you trust the authors of this folder?” what they mean is that it’ll auto-execute .vscode/tasks.json if it exists, which can include shell commands.

maybe that’s too many features. you can’t hold all these features. put a few features back

I know I have a lot of followers who are blind, but I'd like to see how many of you are out there that this post will reach!

Including some additional demographics for interest's sake.

Please respond and boost if you don't mind!

FYI Canadians - looks like Canada Computers may have had a credit card skimmer on their site from December 8th through January 22nd. If you bought anything online with a credit card during that time period, I guess watch out for fraudulent-looking transactions. old.reddit.com/r/bapccanada/co
