What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Have you heard Cory Doctorow's proposal to permit jailbreaking to improve tech in Canada?

It sounds like Canadian officials and tech industry heads are about to listen... This development is like water in the desert rn.

What's happening in Minnesota is an escalation of things that have happened in other cities - Chicago, Portland, LA, DC. It could be coming to your city next.

I don't say that to scare you. But it might be good to ask yourself:

If this was happening in my neighborhood, who would I reach out to? How would I take action? Who would I trust?

Start building those connections now. If you already have some, strengthen them.

Reminder: if you're posting about US politics (as so very many of you are right now, and for good reason!), please tag it with #USPol and maybe #politics. If you're posting about #AlexPretti, or about #Minneapolis, or whatever, please tag it appropriately.

This will help people *find* your posts, as well as filtering them! It's a win-win!

(Also, please CamelCase your tags if they're more than 1 word. It makes them way more readable.)

DANGER when Snow Shoveling – Signs to Watch For Research shows that the exertion of shoveling snow may lead to a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest. The act of shoveling snow is mostly arm work, which is more taxing and demanding on the heart than leg work. If you have known or suspected heart disease or risk factors for heart disease, get someone...

“If you think about it some more, the Lockdown Mode should be the default mode for ... mobile devices. And not because of the security implications. Those are an added bonus. Because of the stupidity implications.”

“None of the "restricted" features are actually important or desired. Think about it. Calls from people you don't know? Check! Photo location blocking? Check! Web pages with pointless remote fonts? Double check! Sounds like an Internet reset, going back to 2010, when the computing world was nicer, saner, cleaner!”

I don’t agree with this entire article, but it’s a pretty thought-provoking take on iOS lockdown mode and how the author sees it as a usability improvement.

Secy of claimed that the victim walked up to the agents with the intent to slay several of them. White House Deputy Chief of Staff posted on X that an “assassin tried to murder federal agents.” Neither of these…correspond with the video evidence.

police say had a firearms permit, & that open carry is legal in the state for permit holders. Video of the incident shows him holding a phone, not a gun. Officers do not seem to have realized he was armed until after they pinned him to the ground, & the video does not show them opening fire until *after* they have taken away his pistol.

"That’s the job. If “AI” is actually more expensive than paying actual people actual wages that’s still a good investment for capital because it is about breaking up the structures, networks and organizations that help workers organize and fight for labor standards and fairer wages."

A good reminder that we shouldn't just attack AI on how bad it is at what it's supposed to do.
