Paul Krugman:
"It has been clear for a long time, to anyone willing to see, that the people running the federal government — Trump, Miller, Noem, Bovino and more — are monsters. It has been equally obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol are now filled with sadistic thugs. Yet many people — almost the entire GOP, everyone serving in the Trump administration, some Democrats, a significant part of the media — were too cowardly to admit the obvious."

This is quite lovely. I remember deathcrash being the first (socially distanced) gig I've seen after Covid restrictions were partially lifted, in a Hackney church.

And I can't help loving a chorus that goes "this is shytown all the way" ❤️

In November 2023 I ordered four Kasa Smart light switches. I intended to install them over the holidays in 2023. Last weekend I installed 3 of the 4 I had purchased. Today I *finally* installed the last one. Why did I wait so long to install them? Not really sure … it was actually super straight forward. Guess I just needed to do the first one in order to finally get them all done. Anyway, peace has been reestablished in my home as everyone can use light switches as intended now 😁

Staying connected to the Fediverse at FOSDEM

Evan Prodromou @evanprodromou@socialwebfoundation.org

Next week is European Open Source Week in Brussels, culminating in FOSDEM 2026 on the weekend. There are several important ways to stay connected to the Fediverse while you're visiting this week! Mastodon maintains a booth at FOSDEM throughout the weekend. It's a great place to get Mastodon merch or take a selfie with the Mastodon team. The Social Web Dev Room is a day-long event on Jan 31 in room H.2215 with loads of talks about Fediverse software and Fediverse organizing. There will be a […]

So, the Fediverse is going to be chock full of updates from Brussels for FOSDEM and EU Open Source Week this week.

I know that can lead to some FOMO if you wish you could be there too. There will be live streaming and lots of updates on the related hashtags.

We have a lot of other events throughout the year, around the world. Fediforum does a great job tracking Fediverse-related events:

If I get a work message without punctuation, I leave it out too in the reply. Only I write in such a way as to be ambiguous, with different interpretations depending on where the punctuation would go if it were included. A bit like the Oxford comma, only worse.

So, if you're not quite sure who to believe about how the killing of Alex Pretti went down, here is BBC Verify's analysis of the available footage of the confrontation...

And lets be clear: this is the execution of a US citizen by Federal agents....

and in case you wondering, the National Rifle Association is up in arms (pun intended); carrying a legal gun in the US has often be justified as vital to resist agents of an oppressive state.

subjectively good: i like it but you probably won't
objectively good: a ratings aggregator website says it's an 8/10
bijectively good: high aggregator score but i didn't like it
dejectively good: i'm disappointed that i like it because it has a LOT of flaws that would normally ruin something for me and i feel conflicted about recommending it when i hate most similar media
rejectively good: it's so polished and seamless to the point that i just can't enjoy it because it feels soulless. see also: qualityslop
adjectively good: "it's really good if you're into [ADJECTIVE] movies and you're okay with [ADJECTIVE] stuff and [ADJECTIVE] or [ADJECTIVE] scenes and also the director is kinda [ADJECTIVE] about [CLASS OF PERSON] and..."
projectively good: "the first few (episodes/levels/chapters/hours/installments/volumes) are pretty bad but after that it slaps"
superprojectively good: "everything they've released so far has been pretty disappointing but there are some solid ideas in there and the future (episodes/levels/etc) will probably be awesome"
hyperprojectively good: "okay it's finished and the whole thing sucks, but the fanfiction it inspired is so good"

After months of struggling with the “zombie post” issue on Hackers' Pub—where deleted posts wouldn't disappear from remote servers—I had a sudden hypothesis today. As I dug into it, I realized it's a structural issue with Fedify's MessageQueue system: Create(Note) and Delete(Note) activities can be delivered out of order, causing remote instances to receive Delete(Note) before Create(Note).

The fix will likely require API changes, so this will probably need to wait for 2.0.0.
