What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

So, the Fediverse is going to be chock full of updates from Brussels for FOSDEM and EU Open Source Week this week.

I know that can lead to some FOMO if you wish you could be there too. There will be live streaming and lots of updates on the related hashtags.

We have a lot of other events throughout the year, around the world. Fediforum does a great job tracking Fediverse-related events:

I know a guy who used to be a conservative, until he went to college. It wasn't "woke professors" that change him to a liberal, it was being in an actual city instead of the small town he grew up in.

Meeting more diverse people made him realize he was fed lies about others while growing up.

So yeah, if you ever wondered why the right wants to shut down education and universities, that's one reason.

Sharing my wife's writing here, about this moment in Minnesota (1/4):

We are not ok. Alex Pretti should be alive tonight. Renee Good should be alive tonight. Our neighbors should be alive. Families should be together.

There is no normal life here. Not in South Minneapolis. Not when the federal government is moving through our neighborhoods to create fear, chaos, and ruined lives. This isn’t “enforcement.” This is terror getting normalized, block by block.

People are afraid to leave their homes. School is canceled again and again. We are watching families switch to virtual learning because it isn’t safe for their kids to be there in person. And when there is school, we are watching kids kept inside at recess because it isn’t safe to be outside, because ICE is here. We are watching kids abducted and used for bait. We are watching how scared they are. We are watching immigrant-owned businesses close early or not open at all. We are watching small businesses that barely survived 2020, COVID, and the Uprising get hit again, and we are watching that familiar look settle in, the one that says: we might not make it through this. This is what it looks like when you chip away at family life until the whole thing starts to crack. The assault is coming from every corner.

And it’s not random. It’s politically incited violence with real consequences, landing on real people in real neighborhoods. We already know what this looks like when it escalates. Last June someone came after our elected officials and their families, dressed like law enforcement, and Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed, and Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette barely survived. In August, two kids were killed at Annunciation during a school mass, shot through the church windows. Then in early December DHS launched its ICE “surge” here. On January 6 they announced they were sending up to 2,000 federal personnel into Minneapolis like our city is a proving ground, then added another 1,000-plus of their secret police, with a looming threat of military troops.

St Cuthbert's Cave, a spectacular south-facing location on the Kyloe Hills in Northumberland, between Belford and Lowick, is a place steeped in legend.
In the late 9th century, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, records that as the Danes ravaged Lindisfarne, Eardulf, the bishop of Lindisfarne, along with abbot Eadred and the rest of the early Christian community were forced to flee the island, taking the body of their beloved Cuthbert to seek a place of safety and sanctuary.
This natural sandstone cave has long been associated with a legend as being a place, a few miles in from the coast, where they rested and took shelter.
However, another legend suggest it was a place where Cuthbert himself lived as an anchorite hermit, before moving to the Farne Islands – maybe it was both!
The cave, formed of overhanging rock and sufficiently large to provide shelter for a small group, are in the care of the National Trust.

A natural sandstone cave in the Kyloe Hills of Northumberland is associated through legend with the 7th century Saxon St Cuthbert.

USPol, on protesting and compliance

All of these statements are equivalent messaging:

"If she had just moved her car when told to the first time she would still be alive"

"If he hadn't had a gun on him he'd still be alive"

"If you comply with the authorities then you will not die"

"COMPLY OR DIE"

If you, or people you know, have lived through and resisted a repressive regime, you probably recognise what has been happening in Minnesota, and know the above to be true.

To set things right in America COMPLIANCE IS NOT AN OPTION. The messaging above is the part of the fascist playbook to suppress dissent.

It is also a LIE. If you aren't part of the in-group you may still die even if you comply.

The US is beyond the point where passive protests are sufficient. Citizens MUST continue to obstruct federal authorities and must ramp up the resistance (violence of course being the last resort and strictly used in defence).

You WILL be blamed for escalation, but they are already escalating, and blaming.

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber

i remember there was someone who complained about mnt making the pocket reform in purple because it was "a gay color", whereby i saw at least two different people casually say in a longer sentense / paragraph that they bought it in the gay color, and by the context it was clear that they had flipped it around into something positive.

it was implied that it ment something like "how freakin' awesome that you can buy the worlds's coolest computer in this amazing color."

🇮🇷 Update: Brief returns of internet access are driving spikes in Snowflake usage. Please help us run more proxies if you can. ❄️ snowflake.torproject.org

The easiest ways to run Snowflake is by using Tor Browser, Orbot, or installing the browser add on in your current browser. Extra capacity helps people in Iran stay connected when the network comes back online.

A purple illustration of a snowflake, with white text on dark background saying: Help people bypass censorship, run Snowflake. snowflake.torproject.org.

Health Canada is cutting almost 20% of its workforce.

Officially this is: "modernizing and streamlining its programs and operations, focusing resources on its core mandate and high-impact activities. The work of the department will be guided by science and evidence to uphold its core mandate of protecting the health and safety of Canadians....
“The Department is also consolidating administrative functions, adopting digital and automation tools, and modernizing service delivery to enhance agility and client service.”

Language like this has been repeated by every administration for decades. It will do nothing to reassure anyone. Let alone better serve the country.
