게임의 내용을 수정하여 플레이하는 모딩은 미디어 이론 측면에서 흥미로울 수 있는데, 창작자와 수용자의 관계에 있어서 수용자가 "창작물의 내용을 개변하여" 수용하는 형태의 미디어 상호작용이기 때문이다.

『The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim』 『마인크래프트』 등과 함께 대중화된 모딩은, 점차 게이머 대중에게도 모딩을 게임을 즐기는 방법 중 하나로 인식시켰다. 『스타크래프트』 등에서도 이미 많이 볼 수 있었던 '유즈맵'과 같은 기존의 UGC와 공통적인 점으로는 개발자가 고려하지 않았던 게임을 즐기는 방식이 가능해졌다는 점을 들 수 있겠고, 차이점으로는 개발자가 제공한 규격 안에서 만들어지던 것과 달리 좀 더 과격한 수단을 이용해 플레이를 커스터마이즈하게 되었다는 것을 들 수 있겠다.

(참고로 여기서 비교의 대상이 된 스타크래프트의 유즈맵 씬은 스타크래프트의 메모리 취약점 또한 활용하며 활동했음을 그들의 명예를 위해 적어 둔다)

모드를 통해서, 플레이어는 경험을 자기 자신에게 최적화할 수 있다. 난이도를 조정해 더 쉽게, 혹은 더 어렵게 플레이한다거나, 자신이 원하지 않는 콘텐츠를 제거한다거나(거미 공포증이 있는 플레이어가 거미를 다른 모양의 몬스터로 바꾸는 모드를 넣는다거나) 자신이 원하는 콘텐츠를 집어넣는다거나 하는 등. 나는 내가 즐기고 싶은 게임을 내가 조립해나가는 이 행위가 정말 즐겁다. 고통스럽기도 하고.

그러나 모드를 만드는 일 자체도 쉬운 일이 아니며, 결국 대부분의 모드 사용 플레이어는 다른 사람이 만든 모드를 선택적으로 적용하는 정도로만 게임의 내용을 변경할 수밖에 없다: 모드 없는 게임에서 플레이어가 다양한 경로를 택하는 것이 결국 개발자의 의도 안에 있을 수밖에 없듯, 모드를 적용해서 게임을 플레이하는 모드 사용 플레이어의 경험도 수많은 모드 제작자들의 집합적 의도 공간 안에 존재할 수밖에 없다: 그 공간도 결국 유한하며 2^{세상에 존재하는 모드 개수}보다 클 수는 없을 것이다. 현실적으로는 모드 콘텐츠가 너무 많아지면 다른 여러 분야와 마찬가지로 큐레이션이 필요하고, 그 결과 요즈음 모드가 충분히 많은 게임들은 모드팩이 대세가 된 것 같다.

『귀곡팔황』과 같은 게임에서는 모드가 게임의 디자인 문제를 풀기 위해서 커뮤니티 내에서 권장되는 사례를 볼 수 있다: 게임의 디자인과 콘셉트 상 반복적이고 시간이 오래 걸리는 플레이를 해야 하는데, 잘 만든 Immersive sim 특성상 다른 캐릭터로 반복플레이를 하는 것이 자연스럽기도 하다. 이 경우 시간이 오래 걸리고 그 과정 자체를 즐기기는 어려운 '노가다'를 회피하고 싶어진다. 커뮤니티는 이 경우에 그냥 '트레이너', 즉 '치트성 모드'를 사용해서 노가다를 단축하고 본인이 즐기고 싶은 재미에 집중하라고 권유하곤 한다. 인터넷에서 '치트를 쓸 거면 그냥 게임을 하지 마라' 같은 글을 꽤 오래 봐 온 입장에서 저런 조언을 봤을 때에는 정말 감동스럽기까지 했다. TRPG를 플레이하는 사람들이 이 트윗이 지적하는 것처럼 플레이의 저자이자 시나리오를 현장에서 고쳐 쓰는 공저자가 되듯, 나는 컴퓨터 게임의 플레이어에게도 자기 자신의 즐거움을 위해 게임을 고쳐쓸 수 있어야 한다고 생각한다.

『파이널 판타지 14』 이야기를 해야 한다. 구체적으로는 이 공지와 이 공지 전후로 있었던 일에 대해서 이야기해야 한다. 이 공지가 지적하는 행위가 명백히 영업방해행위인 것과 별개로, 나는 별로 '창작자가 의도한 대로 게임을 즐겨라' 같은 의견에 동의하고 싶지는 않다.

위에서도 조금씩 언급했지만, '해도 되는 것'과 '하면 안 되는 것'의 선은 시시각각 바뀐다. 그러나 이런 표현은 수동적이고 행동하는 사람을 숨긴다: 하면 안 된다고 여겨지던 것들을 하는 사람들이 있고, 사람들이 하고 있는 행위를 하지 못하게 하는 사람들이 있다. 선이 새로 그인다는 것은 그것들의 파생된 결과일 뿐이다.

'경험이 파편화된다'는 것에 대한 이야기도 해야 한다. 어떤 사람들이 지적하고 어떤 사람들은 우려하는 것처럼 보이는 이것―예를 들자면 TV의 존재로 인해 '국민 스타'가 존재할 수 있었던 시절과 유튜브에서 엄청난 구독자 수를 자랑하는 유명 스트리머도 옆사람은 듣도보도 못했을 수도 있는 요즘을 비교하는 것. 모드는 확실히 경험을 파편화시키는 방향일 것이다. 하지만 어떤 모드를 적용하건 결국 같은 게임을 (다른 모드 구성으로) 플레이한 다른 사람과 게임의 플레이 경험에 대해서 이야기할 수 있는 것이 흥미롭다고 생각한다. 만화가 비슷한 기술의 영향을 받는 상황에 대한 마사토끼의 상상을 언급해두고 싶다.

Interviewed on Al Jazeera today about ICE killing Alex Pretti and Renee Good, and made it a point to speak the names of all 9 people ICE has killed so far in 2026. Including Keith Porter, Parady La, Heber Sanchaz Domínguez, Victor Manuel Diaz, Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, and Geraldo Lunas Campos.

We need unity of humanity against fascism and autocracy.

It's frustrating to see social media platforms keep popping up with nebulous claims to be better that are just policies, rather than fundamental features of the software (i.e., using open protocols like ActivityPub or even ATProto)

I'm sure the people behind UpScrolled have the best of intentions, but I can't imagine they'll escape the monkey's paw of investor demands, and then people will have to find something else ad infinitum
