A study by Anthropic(!):

"We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery. On a quiz that covered concepts theyโ€™d used just a few minutes before, participants in the AI group scored 17% lower than those who coded by hand, or the equivalent of nearly two letter grades. Using AI sped up the task slightly, but this didnโ€™t reach the threshold of statistical significance."

Dropping into the middle of this from Mastodon

"I still think that a large part of the lack of interlocking with the rest of the fediverse is also due to the fact that own hashtags are used"

I've been camping on the

/public/local

ever since it's been up

Checking just now I see virtually *no* hashtag use, period

That's zero

Searching from my Mastodon instance for the single hashtag I see, nothing is returned

It's almost like the Forkiverse exists in a separate, alternate universe, not to overwork the -verse suffix...

It's really heartbreaking to see a technically superior OS (MacOS/iOS) turn into complete dogshit because the people running the show are clueless.

They had the best implementations of almost everything but decided to just keep making the user experience worse every release and letting the craziest bugs manifest and go unaddressed for years

I guess with Cook being so focused on making Apple a services-focused company it was bound to happen, but damn... they really ruined a technical masterpiece.

And worse, every release they make it even harder for a competent engineer to actually debug these kind of issues. What good is having Dtrace if you can't even use it because of SIP, etc?

Might get banned from the for this, but I think I need the Algorithm. How am I supposed to know who to follow, what to pay attention to, or whatโ€™s going to be most interesting to me without an Algorithm feeding it to me? Old Facebook worked because it was my friends, but this is just a bunch of random people I donโ€™t know. How do I navigate this? I feel like the humans in WALL-E freed from their entertainment pods unable to navigate the world.

With all the recently unemployed people in tech nowadays (3+ years of rolling layoffs), I wonder if there's enough available skill and drive to form local co-ops dedicated to getting their city/state/county off of Microsoft/Google/AWS tech stacks and onto something open and non-corporate?

It'd almost certainly be cheaper than what the city/state/county are paying now and would
actually boost local employment.

Hi friends and hi @CaseyCasey Newton @kevinKevin Roose

I wrote my first Substack and feel like sharing it on a platform of nice people.

My essay is about phone addiction and a post on my distinctly anti-phone IG account that just went viral last night.

LOL love how a little 'ist' snuck in there. I used to have English, Swedish and German all live as spell check and autocomplete on my smartphone keyboard at once, but it got confused as heck. I now have both English and German on at once, and switch into Swedish only when needed.
