This International Zebra Day, meet a spotted zebra. This individual, photographed in Africa’s Masai Mara, exhibits darker-than-usual pigmentation and a spotted coat—the result of a rare genetic mutation affecting its melanin production. Zebras like the one pictured here are extremely uncommon. Scientists think that such mutations can hinder an individual’s chance at survival, making hiding from predators much more difficult.

A photo of a spotted zebra foal. The animal is primarily black with white dots (looks brown to me).

Did you know someone named and extinct hell ant after David Bowie?

Haidomyrmex davidbowiei

IT WAS NOT ME. (Lattke & Melo, 2020 anyone know these two?)

I would never name an animal after a person.

...
...

BUT ... that is a sick name. So metal. So hair. So everything.

You don't use open source software because it's better (it usually isn't).

You don't use open source software because it's freer (it only sometimes is).

You don't use open source software because it's got better politics (it isn't always).

You use open source software because *it is the only option*. In the long run, if it isn't open source, it doesn't exist.

Email explaining Adobe is abruptly discontinuing Adobe Animate in one month.

@mcc Using Twitter as the first time that a lot of people experienced this, I have started pitching this idea as "if a petulant billionaire decides to destroy this project, how much would he need to pay?" Every point of centralization is now a massive vulnerability instead of a cost-cutting necessity, because you don't even need the petulant billionaire.

people, I have a question about names. In the following example, what do you call the first line of this function (everything from `def` through the colon)?

Followup question: When someone refers to the "function definition" does that make you think of the entire function, or just part of it?

def report_observation(bird: str) -> str:
    """Report a birding observation."""
    return f"A {bird} was seen during the count period."

msg = report
print(msg)
