Anyway the reason I roll my eyes at most of the discussion about "AI", "AGI", "the singularity", "intelligence self-improvement feedback loop" is that like, it happened, it's already happened, it's been happening, it's us. We're it.
Kurzweil talked about lusting for a machine that can make him smarter. I have that, it's a piece of paper. I can write math on a piece of paper and solve problems I can't solve in my head. I can upload all the information in the world directly into my brain (books).
What "singularity" fanatics actually want is to not have to put in the work

My new rice cooker beeps when it finished cooking. It was one of the features I've been wanting (to be notified that the rice is ready) but it beeps like 5 times and super loud, even louder than my own wake up alarm 😅 (and there is no way to adjust the volume).
Oh well maybe one day they'll make it play a song just like the laundry machines these days.

In their quest to emulate reform, the government has a consultation open on whether they should extend the time to gain settled status to actually decades! If this were the rule when I arrived, I still would not be eligible.
The UK government is trying to extend the time to get 'earned settlement' (legal security to live in the UK) for migrants from 5 years to 20, and make it almost impossible to meet the requirements if you're low income. They're collecting opinions on this proposed change - please share and fill it out! Only ONE WEEK left!
Some of the questions are purposefully worded difficultly - you can always skip the ones you’re unsure of. The most import part to answer is you *‘strongly disagree’* with the new proposed changes. And that *‘there should be no penalties’* to the question regarding asylum seekers arriving by small boat.

I just talked to a PhD student who had a scheduled faculty interview at a US R1 CS department two weeks from now, but not anymore: the position has been cancelled due to budget constraints. It's one thing to not be hiring this year -- but they actually opened a search, reviewed applications, invited folks for interviews, and *then* cancelled the position? A bunch of people's time just got wasted on both sides, to say nothing of the heartbreak of getting an interview and then having it cancelled.

Can someone on this side of the web plainsplain atproto, activitypub, etc to me? Not technically but like, ... Not politically, maybe like... Explain it like a recap of a reality TV show?
atproto = "distributed" like housewives stars; there's few of them and they're very expensive to maintain
activitypub = "distributed" like survivor stars; they're all completely psycho but they can built a functioning shelter from parts they found in the woods, and there's like 100 seasons

For those who don't know: Interledger, WebMonetization and OpenPayments are basically the same thing, these projects were created by Ripple ~10 years ago in order to insert their cryptocurrency and related payment services into web standards. These projects are sometimes presented as independent, but this is a lie, they are not (not in 2019, not in 2025).

It's not even a cryptocurrency really, their infrastructure is completely centralized and no one in cryptocurrency space takes them seriously. One of the milestones that must be achieved before releasing Hollo 1.0.0 is supporting the ActivityPub C2S API, which in turn depends on ActivityPub C2S support in Fedify—also a major milestone for that project.

We're investigating European-based Patreon alternatives. Does anyone have any experience with any of them? We're looking at Steady but it appears that they process their payments through Paypal which kinda defeats the point of trying to use a European platform...
