What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: cmx.xuzhou-jiang.su/@Network/1

we migrated our pleroma git server to forgejo! it'll take a few days to fix up the few things that could not be migrated, so please wait warmly if you find something that doesn't work yet. (if you're a dev, please report on irc)

Changed my defaults to private by default with quotes off.

I like the feel of this; I can’t easily accidentally blast an opinion or belief into the public sphere (privacy of ActivityPub notwithstanding, a topic that’s been covered to pieces) but if I want something public it’s easy to opt-in. So far I enjoy the forced thoughtfulness.

Just try a thought exercise okay? We'll ease into this:

Stop saying "Nobody in the billionaire pedophile nazi cultist ring will suffer any consequences for the crimes they committed" and instead say "the system will not hold the billionaire pedophile nazi cultists accountable for the crimes they've committed so if we want them to be punished, we have to overthrow the system and do it ourselves."

Just, try that on for a bit. Because it's the road out of the hell you're living in right now.

:blobcatoh:

"The American sports community, athletes and fans, are more political this year than anything I’ve seen since the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. It’s deeper than that.

The NBA crowd warm-up chant is, 'FUCK ICE.' The All Star Wrestler Event, the champ Brody King wore an Abolish ICE shirt. It’s the same across major league sports, including football."

"Kevin Welch of EFF-Austin, a digital civil liberties organization, said the LVT contract is fundamentally flawed because it has no enforcement mechanism. “I see data abused and misused by well-intentioned people every day,” Welch said. “The reality is, the only data that is safe is the data that is not collected. There is no bureaucratic means of reforming this. And there is no reason to trust a contract that has no enforcement mechanism.”" austinchronicle.com/news/the-m

x.com/i/status/202017428688415

I had an interesting conversation on here recently that made me realize that maybe not everyone who uses Mastodon knows that you can use filters as a way to add content warning to other people's posts?

I'm looking for people who moved to a different country past the age of 45 and found a job there (so not "my company had a branch there and I was transferred" but "I would like to move there and need to find a way") to share their story with me.

I need some reassurance that it's not too late for me to do the thing I would like to do but haven't been able to so far 🫠

Bonus points if moving to this country involved having to learn a new language.

Boosting is greatly appreciated, thank you! 🙏

Edit: Oh wow, I've already gotten so many replies! Thank you all so very much, I'll respond to every single one asap 🥰

Also: I'm not looking for jobs atm, this post was more about "damn did I wait too long and will moving to another country even still be an option for me or am I too old" and wanting to hear some encouraging stories 😅

What I notice over and over again: I would not like to live in a part of Germany, where the next other country is maybe hundreds of kilometers away.

I need the proximity to the Netherlands and Belgium especially. There's sort of a cultural diffusion, bringing their culture, habits, food and attitude to this part of the country, making it less … German.

Thank you, Belgian and Dutch people :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

ので反戦ウゼェと考えてても感動できて特に考えも変えずに済んだ」だったってことだよな x.com/i/status/202015707735277

The tech job market is so bad I submitted my CV for a leadership position in an AI friendly company...

No chance in hell I get it, but I needed to practice the bullshit generator part of my brain that this kind of position implies... Sigh...
