What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

There’s an article about a software I wrote on @lwnLWN.net . I’m very proud of this!

lwn.net/Articles/1057766/

But this is not a first! It already happened… exactly 16 years ago!

lwn.net/Articles/370454/

Some stuff never change…

And I believe that the people reading it are also the same, only 16 years older, like me ;-)

RE: fedi.lwn.net/@lwn/116041210302

Sometimes I daydream about a world where the old-school* web and FOSS folks decamp from the web as it is right now and set up shop on lesser-used protocols like Gemini or Gopher, IRC, and text-based email and leave the wreckage of the adware, scraperbot infested web behind...

* Not just greybeards like myself -- think of it as the "Vinyl Web" for anybody who just wants to make cool things and have interesting discussions. People of all ages welcome...

It's now been 1 1/2 weeks since Apple removed my review of the app on the Apple Store. I have an escalated customer request with a personal contact to have it reinstated, and they're "actively working on the case" since a week.

I've already quoted a nice little recent post by the @EUCommissionEuropean Commission in my communication with them, where the EC pointed out that "In Europe, you have the right to challenge content moderation decisions taken by platforms.". Just to be clear, there was _no_ way to specifically challenge the decision - the link in the email sent out by Apple went to the general customer service who have no insight or access to the content moderation team and decisions. I had to fight to get to where my case is now.

I will take this all the way through the legal system unless they get their act together. I used to be supportive of back in the day, but no more.

I'm not just working on @loops, @fedidb, @webintents, @activityrank, and other initiatives.

I'm also quietly rebuilding @pixelfed, preparing it for a major release that solves every bug and issue you've ever had.

It's not easy, or quick. I have to redesign and rewrite every page, including the admin dashboard.

But trust me, it will be worth the wait.

If you run a Loops server, you know what I mean 😉

Question, does anyone have a link to a 'how does Mastodon work' explanation (or 'how does the Fediverse work') that is understandable for people who still use Instagram or Facebook, for example?

EDIT: I find this page & video by @_elenaElena Rossini 📍 FOSDEM very useful! blog.elenarossini.com/my-fediv

One of my core software engineering practices is writing, by hand, in a physical notebook. It's one of the most important things I do to remain productive and effective. Maybe the single most important. And it's a practice that I see very few others using!

This post talks about what this practice is, why I do it, and why I think more people should try it.

10/ When they finished, users were shown a results screen that explained a bit more about the exercise. There were three possible outcomes: (1) No clear evidence of automation bias (2) You may have fallen victim to automation bias; and (3) You likely fell victim to automation bias.

11/ Almost everyone fell victim to automation bias. The assistant's accuracy was 100% in phase 1 & 2, then dropped to 70%. Student performance started at 79% in phase 1, improved to 85% for a bit, but when the tool's accuracy declined, scores fell to 65%, worse than their initial performance.

A dark, dashboard-style chart showing phase-by-phase performance.
On the left, paired bars compare **user vs. assistant accuracy** across P1 to P3, with the assistant consistently higher and both dipping in P3. On the right, a single set of bars shows **flag-only rates** rising steadily from P1 to P3.
Clean labels, bold percentages, and contrasting colors make trends readable at a glance.
