What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Watching a Star Trek clip recently, it struck me that humanity currently has ~7100 distinct languages. Yet on Star Trek, they speak "Klingon" or "Romulan" or "Vulcan", etc as if a planet only ever had one language. That'd be like saying you speak Human.

That's now going to bug me indefinitely.

Which EU country will be the first to officially move its public institutions to a national Mastodon instance, bringing political debate to the Fediverse and away from disinformation platforms like X?

We know some national-level instances already exist (e.g. in Germany). The question is: who will make it a political decision, not just a technical one?

If you think of another country, add it in the comments 👇

I bought a copy of "The Book of PF" from @pitrhPeter N. M. Hansteen

It's the best and most comprehensive resource about the marvelous PF firewall that I've ever seen, and I've been using PF since the early days.

Amazing work!

It's available here on No Starch Press: nostarch.com/book-of-pf-4th-ed

I also recently wrote a practical guide on PF (blog.hofstede.it/pf-firewall-o) for anyone who wants to get started :-)

フリフリな服の幼女が素手で殴ったり棍棒で殴ったり殴られたりするの良くない?

Some of you noticed that @HolosDiscover is following you. It's a Fediverse search engine we built to solve a problem: when you start your own server with , your index is empty. provides a ready-to-use content catalog for everyone.
Only public posts from consenting users are indexed. Deletions and edits are reflected in real-time through ActivityPub activities.

How it works: discover.holos.social/how-it-w

Open-source (AGPL-3.0): codeberg.org/tom79/Holos-Disco

New blog post time!

This week's game is Firebugs, a stylish PS1 racer that combines high speeds with lots of items and manages to make it very approachable even if you're a racing game casual like myself. If you're fond of the Rollcage games, this is kinda like a third one by the same people!

I was just struck by a section header in a Tyee article:

"**When companies can’t pay, taxpayers do**"

Understandable, happens all the time unfortunately. Here is the problem: it clearly indicates 'companies' are not 'taxpayers'. If corporations were paying the majority of Provincial revenues, **it would be in their interest to prevent other corps leaving cleanup costs to .**

Bam. Suddenly corporations would support cleanup bonding insurance.

We're excited to launch our most-requested Bridgy Fed feature: being able to interact with unbridged users!

Starting today, when people interact with you on the other side of the bridge, you'll get a notification over DM along with a "respond" link, where you can like, repost, reply, or block.

Sent messages to all of my Discord friends and told them I'm deleting the app and asked for other methods to contact them and gave them my contact info as well.

Each one of them responded with contact info. They were leaving as well.

Don't let others keep you on a service that doesn't care about you.

I've been writing a blog series about automating AV archival workflows. Part 3 dropped today, and it's the one I'm most excited about. The post details the features and functionality of AV Spex, a Python app I wrote for the Smithsonian's NMAAHC. It wraps open-source tools like QCTools, MediaConch, and MediaInfo into a single GUI, checks files against expected specs, and collects everything into one HTML report.
