What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Each time a new privacy-invasive
feature like facial scanning is implemented, if people in majority comply and accept to use it, it will soon become normality, and other options will be marginalized or even removed entirely.

If each time a new privacy-invasive
feature is implemented people opted to refuse it, it would soon be discontinued.

Each individual opposition to privacy-invasive features matters.

It is an act of self-protection but,
perhaps even more importantly,
it is also an act of protest.

A protest against the normalization of mass surveillance and the loss of privacy rights.

The fact that there are other cameras around doesn't mean that more cameras or additional scanning is not making things even worse.

If we do not refuse,
if we do not fight for our privacy rights,
we will lose them all.

It's also an action of protection of society.
Eventually, some form of fascism will be in force, regardless of society. The less surveillance there is, the better chances the society has for ridding itself of the fascism and returning to safe tracks.

We as a society "have nothing to hide" right now, but in the future we will, some day.
Who supports surveillance is an enemy of the organized society.

Want to know how much memory (in bytes) your machine has installed? Let
sysctl(8) tell you with the following command:

sysctl hw.realmem

The realmem value is memory before the kernel and modules are loaded, whereas
hw.physmem is what is left after they were loaded.

The number of active CPUs is displayed using this command:

sysctl hw.ncpu

Anyone have contact with Microsoft network ops? They've blackholed my SMTP (204.11.50.134) (which is used by me and half a dozen other people, none of whom send spam), and my admin's on vacation and I don't wanna screw up his time off. This is obviously a false positive though.

Sent messages to all of my Discord friends and told them I'm deleting the app and asked for other methods to contact them and gave them my contact info as well.

Each one of them responded with contact info. They were leaving as well.

Don't let others keep you on a service that doesn't care about you.

Tip: Firefox supports offline and locale translation via the URL bar.
For example:
about:translations#src=en&trg=fr&text=Firefox+can+do+translation+without+network+access
You can explicitly set the source (src) and target (trg) languages.

I wanted to set up presence detection in Home Assistant without exposing my installation to the internet, and without giving the companion app on my phone access to location data.

I use MikroTik network gear at home, so I added the Mikrotik integration to Home Assistant. It showed my phone as a MAC address, connected through Wifi, and I used that as device tracker. Everything seemed fine, but then the next afternoon. the device tracker still showed me as Away.

I then discovered that GrapheneOS (edit: Android rather, see below) uses a different random MAC address for each connection to a network, as default. Changed it to use a static random MAC for my home network, and now it works as intended.

All this to avoid running the Morning Coffee automation if I'm not even home.

home-assistant.io/integrations

Screen shot from Home Assistant -> History for person Michael, showing me Home, Away, and then Home again. This matches my phone's connection to the home network.

Watching a Star Trek clip recently, it struck me that humanity currently has ~7100 distinct languages. Yet on Star Trek, they speak "Klingon" or "Romulan" or "Vulcan", etc as if a planet only ever had one language. That'd be like saying you speak Human.

That's now going to bug me indefinitely.

Which EU country will be the first to officially move its public institutions to a national Mastodon instance, bringing political debate to the Fediverse and away from disinformation platforms like X?

We know some national-level instances already exist (e.g. in Germany). The question is: who will make it a political decision, not just a technical one?

If you think of another country, add it in the comments 👇

I bought a copy of "The Book of PF" from @pitrhPeter N. M. Hansteen

It's the best and most comprehensive resource about the marvelous PF firewall that I've ever seen, and I've been using PF since the early days.

Amazing work!

It's available here on No Starch Press: nostarch.com/book-of-pf-4th-ed

I also recently wrote a practical guide on PF (blog.hofstede.it/pf-firewall-o) for anyone who wants to get started :-)
