What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

This is not a very easy period for me. Even though I try to stay positive, I have worries and things that keep me tense, so my mind often looks for an escape toward more positive thoughts.
The BSD Cafe, the illumos Cafe, the wonderful friends from the Fediverse and the BSD community, and many of them also in real life. Because for me the digital world and the physical one are closely interconnected. And that's fantastic.

That is exactly why I am not ashamed to say that today, when I arrived at the office to meet the insurance adjuster, I found a package waiting for me. I already knew part of what was inside, but two other items, the ones in the photo here, even though the chocolates were not for me but for my wife, were a surprise. They were unexpected and I admit I was moved while opening it.

Thank you. Truly, thank you. Because I do not need AI telling me I am right even when I am wrong, but human beings whose warmth can be felt even across many, many, many kilometers.

An ornate porcelain mantel clock decorated with pink roses and gold details sits on a white table. In front of it lies a dark green envelope sealed with a grey wax stamp, flanked by two small heart-shaped chocolates wrapped in gold foil.

There is a way to implement proof of age that respects both speech and privacy rights. It's just not on offer.

In a sane country, you could do it with public key cryptography.

1. You digitally sign a statement that you are (let's say) over 18 years old, using your private key.

2. You carry that statement to the nearest post office, where the clerk checks some kind of government age ID like a drivers license. No record is kept, they just verify your age statement is true.

A curious phenomenon over at the problems web page and repository. We've had a hectic two months or so in which we received a flood of new solutions to these problems, coming from a mix of human efforts, purely AI-generated proofs, and hybrid approaches. Some of these turned out to be incorrect, and others ended up being similar to existing solutions, but nevertheless many checked out, leading to nearly 50 more problems being marked as solved on the site during this period.

But in the last week, submissions have dropped to nearly zero. It is not clear exactly what the reason is, but I can think of at least three explanations: (a) the burst of media attention around the Erdos problems has dissipated. (b) all the easy "low-hanging fruit" of obscure Erdos problems amenable to current AI tools have already been harvested. (c) The time-sensitive "First Proof" challenge that came out last week is now absorbing all the attention of AI-prover enthusiasts.

Perhaps it is a combination of all three factors.

A plot of various statistics about the Erdos problems, as recorded on the Erdos problem repository.

One thing that jumps out at you on even a cursory read of research on intelligence is how few people know or can even explain what 'intelligence' is and how one would go about actually measuring it

If you're interested in funding or helping us find funding for a Discord replacement that's federated and end-to-end encrypted, we're interested in implementing that at @spritelyThe Spritely Institute ... we even had been talking about that being our big focus for 2026.

We have the skills and the underlying tech to pull this off. What we need right now is resources. Funding for open source nonprofits like ours really fell apart in 2025. If you think you know how to help, feel free to reach out.

Hello nerds!

We've just created the first release candidate version of #GoToSocial v0.21.0 Sacrilegious Sloth!

https://codeberg.org/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.21.0-rc1

Adventurous admins can try updating to this release candidate, and let us know if there's any new and interesting bugs to be found.

We're really proud of this one, the sloth is starting to feel really useable and good!

Please read the migration notes carefully for instructions on how to upgrade to this version. Bear in mind there are a few big-ish database migrations in this one, which may take somewhere between a minute or 20+ minutes to run (depending on your hardware). Be patient, backup your database first, and don't interrupt the migrations.

Release highlights

  • Domain Limits: You can now create domain limits in the admin section of the settings panel, in order to do things like limit + mute all accounts on a domain (except ones you follow), add content warnings to posts from limited domains, mark media as sensitive (or don't download it at all).
    Documented here: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/admin/domain_limits/
  • Indexable support: You can now mark your account as "indexable" by full-text search, in the settings panel. This will federate your preference to other servers, so that servers with full-text search functionality can include your posts in search results.
    Documented here: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/settings/#mark-accounts-posts-as-full-text-indexable
  • Show reblogs on the web view of your profile (opt-in): A new setting in the settings panel allows you to opt-in to showing posts that you've boosted/reblogged on the web view of your profile. The default setting retains existing behavior (don't show boosts on the web view).
    Documented here: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/settings/#include-boosts-on-the-web-view-of-your-profile
  • Better caching behavior for timelines. The number of database calls when browsing local + public timelines and lists should be significantly reduced.
  • Store + show reason for undownloaded media: When media fails to be downloaded from a remote instance, the reason why will be shown next to the post.
  • Include canQuote property on outgoing posts: Currently, this is always set to author-only, but it paves the way (and signals intent) for GtS to implement quote toots at some point.
  • Much improved OpenGraph previews: Whitespace is now preserved in OpenGraph previews, and media + formatting was rejigged, so linking to GoToSocial posts should result in much better OpenGraph-generated preview cards.
  • Expand/collapse all spoilers button on web view of threads: when viewing threads in the web view, you can now expand/collapse all spoilers at the click of a button.
  • S3 Object Info Caching: you can now configure cache.s3-object-info in order to mitigate expensive S3 info calls when doing nightly media cleanup.
  • Preserve significant whitespaces in incoming + outgoing posts: previously we were squashing a lot of whitespace together, which meant that, for example, indentation could get lost on posts federated into a GoToSocial instance. This is now fixed, so you can post poetry and whatnot without worrying about it looking like hot crap.
  • Millions of fucking bugfixes: we squashed a lot of them!

I've been thinking a lot about and how to make it easy for people to find and join the

Here's some ultra-low-effort drawings of the process I'm imagining. (criticism and refinements welcome)

1. embeddable widgets (follow, like, share, etc) for any site

2. pre-populate search fields to recommend a single server (with overrides)

3. pass extra data to that server on signup so the intent is honored

4. recommend additional accounts based on context

Yes?
